Hostels in Rome and Venice
Hello All,
Some friends and I have decided to take a "spur of the moment" trip to Italy in a few weeks, and I was put in charge of finding a place to stay in both cities. Does anyone have any suggestions of nice, cheap-ish places with good location? It would help me out a lot!
Thanks,
Ellen

Hang out, you'll get that answer fast. I didn't do the hostels in those cities, and I can tell you theres no such thing as cheap in Venice.

I would go and check out the Accomodations section of the boards. You can search within that forum for "Rome" and "Venice" and it might narrow things down a little bit for you.

In Venice, I stayed in the Camping D'Orco camping hostel, and it was fine. Cheap, and they had daily buses into Venice.
In Rome, M&J is near the train station...but I personally think that area of Rome SUCKS, and so does that hostel.,,

Let me double that for the Camping spot in Venice. It's actually on the outside of Venice, beside the main airport if you're flying(Marco Polo). They have little "shacks", with mini heaters depending on how warm it is.
Rome I stayed in, Hostel Happy Days. I believe it's under new management, and not as cool as it use to be. They use to have a free dinner, and big jug of wine every evening. And the location about 3 blocks away from the Vatican was amazing.

i stayed a couple of nights at papa germano in rome. it was kind of small, quiet and clean if that's what you're looking for, but didn't really seem like a place to hang and meet people. it's a block or so from termini which was nice.

I just want to add my suggestion for the camping site in Venice. That is THE place to stay cheap (there are actually a few of them but I stayed at the same one the other guys did, Camping D'Orco.) There are daily cheap shuttle services AND public transportation in case the shuttles dont meet your schedule.
As for Rome, if you are looking for a fun place I suggest The Yellow Hostel. Just make sure you book ahead because they do tend to fill up. The rooms are clean and secure. I was personally worried that this place would be a wild crazy party place but I was really surprised. It has friendly staff, good drinks, and a great atmosphere.

i definitely second the suggestion of the Yellow in rome. Esp. because they now have their own bar on the first floor which was not there when i visited.

Funny thing is that on the morning we left Venice... there was a transporation strike, and no one knew if there would be buses. Fortunately.. there was just one bus in the morning, and we got on =)

I stayed in a budget hotel in venice when I was there, in the university district. If you're traveling with someone else, it's about the same price as a hostel, and you get to stay in an actual neighborhood as opposed to the camping place (which I heard was cool). It was all Italian college students, and we never saw other tourists after dark (when everyone takes buses back to wherever). Can't remember the name, but you can search for "budget hotels" and get several results in that area.

It's probably better not to have expectations in Rome... they tend to be let down. But that's just me =)

I would highly recommend gullivers house on via palermo in rome...prob one of the nicest hostels i've stayed in. they have real and comfortable mattresses, duvets, massage shower heads, plus it's more intimate setting and there isn't a lot of people, the staff is really friendly, they make really good recommendations for you based on what you want to do/see. plus it's closer to a lot more of the sights (than The Yellow) and you get to avoid Termini station for the most part.

The Yellow in Rome is the North American place to stay in my opinion, it can be good if you feel homesick, or want to meet other Americans. It doesn't have a huge Italian feel to it, but if you do stay here check out the pub crawl. I didn't like it just for the fact that Termini station scares the s*** out of me. I can see why people would like it, just depends what you're in to

yeah, termini station seemed wicked dodge. but the side the yellow's on was the good side. i was wandering on the other side one night and felt very uneasy. There were alot of americans there when i was there, but it was spring break. plus there were also heaps of scandinavians. and the pub crawl was good, but not as good(or as busy) as the one that starts at the top of the spanish steps.
