Quick Decision!
 

Hey all,

I thought I would get some input from you guys about my plans. I just graduated from college this week and was offered a job out in Montana being a news anchor.

The news is my passion, but I've always told myself that I would make sure to travel after I got out of school.

I have a job option lined up in England as well living with a famly and being their kids private tennis coach and take them around to tournaments and whatnot.

I'm kind of struggling with what to do...If I don't travel now I don't know when I would be able to...It's tough to get out of the grind.

On the other hand, I'm not so sure if I should pass up this opportunity because these jobs are very competitive...I have to make a decision within 2 days!!!

Um, so you don't know me and my opinion doesn't mean shit.

But.

GO TO ENGLAND!!!!! Even if you're on TV in Montana, you're still... in Montana. ;) Not that that's bad (what part of Montana, anyway?) because there are a lot of lovely things in Montana. I know because I used to live there. If you're anywhere east of, say, Missoula, it's going to be kinda boring because you're out of the mountains. Whereas England, on the other hand, would RULE.

Think of it.

Whenever you get spare time you can jump on a cheap-ass flight to pretty much ANYWHERE in Continental Europe. Yeah, that pretty much sums it up. :D

Go to England. This is one of those limited opportunities to do something really cool that can't be duplicated on a 2 week vacation later. There will be other positions available in the future :)

Go travel, then get your ass back to Butte. ;)

I would think having travel experience abroad like that would be great to have on a resume for a news reporter. Gives you more cultural knowledge or something like that. Just my $0.02.

I'd second that - the more life experience you have, especially regarding different countries and cultures, the more nuance you can bring in to your future career. If they were prepared to make you an anchor right out of school, you've obviously got what it takes to land that job - why not have a chat with them about being a foreign correspondent for a year or whatever...their man on the scene. While they'd mostly cover local news I'd imagine, you might be able to swing some sort of freelance thing where they can call you if they want to do a piece on something big happening on the other side of the Atlantic.

I have been to both Montana and England. i think you should go to England and take that job. Montana is beautiful and i love it, but it will always be there. it is a better place to retire, England will be really new for you and you have oppurtunities to travel from there. It is up to you what your goals are. You have to ask yourself, do you want to see the world or have a lucrative career in the exciting world of newscasting, i would take traveling.

Seeing as how you are now in Scotland, I'm guessing you're not anchoring the news desk in Montana at 11?

I would take the news job... but i would skip the tennis kids job.

But if you feel like you need to travel, just do it... because if you can get a job now, you can get a job later. It just might take some time.

quite right...decided for scotland and turned down the news job...it was a tough thing to do, but i wasn't quite ready to settle down and have a career quite yet, especially at the age of 22...the thing that put me over the top was that i'd been to china, but still had yet to go to europe and feel like i needed to see some things before i could start thinking about work...

funny thing is that now i'm not even real sure that i want to go back to news reporting...i've been teaching tennis out here to a kid and i'm thinking i might go get my masters and then try to be a college tennis head coach...

a bit crazy how different your life could turn out for making a couple of different decisions throughout your younger years...i'm just going to go for what will make me happy...in the meantime, if any of you guys are around the UK let me know and we'll have to get together...
