ok im trying to take a week off and go to oktoberfest! but my budget will only allow for a CHEAP plane ticket. im thinking 500-600 . i lowest ive found is 750 from LAX TO MUC. my parents and friends have told me theyve flown to europe (from LAX) for 500-600 during fall/winter.

anyone have plane ticket search secrets????? suggestions??? websites? anything!!!!

What dates are you looking at going? The trouble is you're coming up against the 21-day advance required for the cheapest flights...

Going on the 29th and returning the following week, the $750 you got quoted is pretty good. The best I can find is $843 on American Airlines (tax included).

Alternately, you can try to get a $500 flight to London Heathrow and fly BMI to Munich and back for around $200, making your total ro ughly $700.

You've got to realize that Munich during Oktoberfest is somewhat of an "anomaly" in the normal "Europe is cheaper during fall/winter." The lowest I've found is to fly Virgin Atlantic from LAX to LHR and then get your bags and re-check them for a flight on Lufthansa from LHR to MUC. To get this price, you'll have to fly back a day later than the dates you mentioned (Oct 3rd rather than Oct 2nd). Also, if you wish to spend any number of nights in London, you can fly back to LA on the 4th, 5th, 6th, etc of October for all the same price. The same is also true if you wanted days in London before Oktoberfest (fly to London on the 21st, 20th, 19th, etc of September).

Virgin Atlantic Flight VS008
Fri 22 SEP
17:20 Depart Los Angeles (LAX)
11:45 Arrive London (LHR) + 1 day
7h05m
Economy

It seems that Virgin Atlantic does NOT have an interline agreement with Lufthansa. You'll have to claim your bags at LHR and re-check them with Lufthansa!

Sat 23 Sep
Lufthansa Flight LH4757
15:35 Depart London, Heathrow
18:20 Arrive Munich, Franz Josef Strauss
1h45
Economy Saver (W)

Tue 3 Oct
Lufthansa Flight LH4752
09:15 Munich, Franz Josef Strauss
10:15 London, Heathrow
2h00
Economy Saver (W)

Again, you'll have to claim your bags at LHR and re-check them with Virgin Atlantic!

Mon 3 OCT
Virgin Atlantic Flight VS023
15:00 Depart London (LHR)
18:35 Arrive Los Angeles (LAX)
2h10m
Economy

Virgin - $562.90
Lufthansa - $193.84
Total = $756.74

The VIRGIN ATLANTIC flight MUST be purchased by September 10th. I am not sure if the Lufthansa flight has a purchase restriction, so it's best to book this ASAP if it will be the flights you'll use.

The flights are bookable (and cheapest) at their respective websites. If you use Travelocity, Expedia, Orbitz, etc, they charge you a booking fee. Let me know if this helps or if you have any further questions.
