Does anyone know of anywhere decent to stay in Hong Kong? We'll probably be after a cheap hotel, or perhaps a funky hostel where we can get an inexpensive private double.

I know HK is a bit infamous for being rather expensive, so I'm not out to find Ritz-like quality! This will be the final leg of a 3 month trip, so I guess how well we've stuck to budget will determine what sort of place we can stay in! I would say perhaps around £15-20 (US$25-35) pppn, but could possibly stretch to more.

I've looked at the hostel booking tool on the TP main page, but I have no clues which ones would come recommended!

I lived there for a while, but I was on exchange so I'm sorry I can't give you exact info! However, I do remember that you should NOT book at -- what's it called -- the something mansions. I believe it's in Kowloon/Lan Kwei Fong. Apparently they're unsafe and horrendous (the area isn't, just that hostel).

In general it might be cheaper for you to stay in Kowloon rather than HK Island. Getting downtown's not a problem because of the WORLD'S BEST METRO SYSTEM, and Kowloon is interesting in itself.

Thanks so much for that. Is it the Mirador Mansions? I've heard of loads of these "mansions", are they basically huge blocks with lots of hostels in? That's the impression I got.

Argh, my guide book seems to have disappeared into the black hole that is my bedroom. I don't know about the Mirador Mansions, but the Chungking Mansions are apparently notorious.

I can't provide specific hostel info, but why don't you list the hostels that you're thinking of staying at, and I can at least tell you if it's in a good area or not. For one, I can tell you that staying in a hostel in Causeway Bay is probably going to be a waste of your time and money. You can day-trip it there and that'll be fine.

Lauren - when looking for hostels in places I'm unfamiliar with, I first try to narrow down a neighborhood in the city that I'd like to be near or in. Then, I browse through the listings and find some that match my criteria (do they have mixed dorms? 24 hour entrance? provided linens? etc) and then I google/yahoo their name to get some reviews. After picking one, I book (through Tpunk of course! ). Hope that helps some.
