When you are out backpacking around Europe duing the summer, how far in advance would you book your accommodation?

Months? Weeks? A few days? The night before?

Peace,

TC, In the summer, i would say months is you have a set itinerary and its a firm one, to be safe, weeks if your kinda going on a whim, but the nigth before??? you could find yourself sleeping in the bus station

Thanks for the reply CD

If you make a booking do you need to put down any kind of deposit? I don't want a hard schedule, I would much rather drift around and go to places on a whim.

The good bit is I have free accommodation in most places I'm going to, so that makes life easy and not to mention cheap.

Do hostel operators get pissed if you don't turn up for a booking?

If you book through this site which is Hostelworld.com, they charge 10% at time of booking, and if you don't show up, they charge you one nights stay and cancel any more nights you have.

Free is always better, bro!!!

The only prob with pre-booking your hostel is you loose that "on a whim" travel ability...you have to choose...what might work is have some hard dates set in stone where you know where you are going to be, the in between those dates drift about like a mad hobo!!!

That sounds like a good idea bro. Maybe I should make hard dates for the busy spots (Bigger cities) and book accommodation for them.

Thanks
