An awesome hostel is travellers hostel.. I had a great time there, and it's right in the city center. It's on Dlouha in Prague 1.. What ever you do, do not stay at TYN hostel.. I would of rather slept on the street then stay in there again!
Have fun! Prague rocks!

I'd avoid 'Atlas Hostel' It is very plain and not comfortable.

If you ever get really really stuck in Prague goto the main train station - there is accomodation pushers. I got an apartment with kitchen, bathroom, washing machine, satellite tv etc with one other guy (who I never met) a few tram stops away for 10euro. Plus you get out of the tourist precinct and the beer is so much cheaper at the local pubs!

DEFINITELY stay at Sophie's Bedrooms. It was amazing. We stayed there Spring 2006 and it had just opened like 6 weeks prior, and it was all brand new and shiny. They have unbelievable sunflower sized showerheads, free internet in the lobby, a sweet common room and kitchen, friendly staff etc. I can't remember how much it cost, but it wasn't a lot. We tried to book it on the internet but it said it was full, but we just went there and asked if they had any rooms and they said yeah, lots! so yeah. go there. amazing.

I stayed at Sir Toby's for a week. It is a little bit outside town so it was cheaper and also had the cheaper local pubs nearby. It is easy to get to as well. only 2 tram stops from the metro.

I stayed at the golden sickle the first time I went to Prague, it's converted from apartments and has a big open courtyard. every 3 dorms have there own kitchen and bathroom. It's gotten some bad reviews but I liked it but that might be more to do with the staff than the place, the bathrooms wheren't the best. No bar but there's one next door. It's very central just of the main street near the museum.

I also stayed in the Clown and bard but it was around September so it was very quiet at that time but it had everything inc bar.

the golden sickle was the worst placed we stayed I wouldn't recommend it to anyone! Maybe its different wwhen your not in a dorm but we were and it was the dirtiest, most unorganized shitty place! The first night that we there they gave me someone elses bed and she couldn't tell which ones were full and empty b/c they all had dirty sheets on them so she just ripped some off and said sleep here....which turned out to be another girls bed...and someone got sick all over the bathroom (the toilet didn't work either) and then when the people came to clean they never cleaned it up it was disgusting

I'm neither here nor there with the Golden Sickle. I met some great people and had a great time, and the room was pretty decent, but the bathrooms were pretty nasty and the overall building was on the shabby side.

Before that, I stayed at the Apart Hotel BV across from the Hotel Evropa on Wenceslas Square and it was pretty awesome, but there isn't much of a social outlet when you don't have common areas.

Don't worry about not being directly in the center of town. As others have said, the bars are cheaper outside of the center, and it's a very small, walkable city anyhow, and the trams and subway are DIRT cheap.

I'd say my standards are allot lower than most I've slept in fields (not camping just to lazy to walk all the way home) and on street corners. So as long as there's a bed I'm happy. I do like old run down buildings aswell.
