I'm thinking of heading to Lagos for the UK early May long weekend. Anyone been there and do you have any hostel or anything else to reccomend (ie: bars, beaches, sight seeing)? We'd be flying into Faro and then taking the bus. Any idea how late the busses run between the two towns?

Hey skorch, how are things buddy?

I arrived to Lagos about midnight without a reservation and stayed at Olinda Teresa Maria. It wasn't a bad place. The lady was a bit nutty but it was clean and comfortable. The next night I switched to the HI across the road. The HI is basically the cheapest in town and it's really good (you wouldn't even know it was a HI). It is modern, has a kitchen, breakfast and great atmosphere. It gets a bit sandy but you would expect that from a beach town.

There is many bars and they are easy to find. Usually there is people out on the streets handing out flyers (not sure if as busy in May). With the beaches I recommend going for a walk along the coast and then settling for the day at the one you like the most.

As for sightseeing I can't remember a lot. I know there was trips out to the grottos (rock formations) which someone recommended.

One final tip - don't expect to see traditional portugal here, it's a real tourist haven. After being in Portugal for nearly two weeks and visiting small villages I felt a bit jaded arriving here with all the tourists. It felt like I was in England minus the bad weather.

I 2nd pretty much everything Ev said....expect to drink a lot, stay out late, lay around the beach, and not do too much more than see the grottos on a boat ride!

I came in and out of Seville, which is about a 3 hour bus ride away and runs 2x a day. When you come in off the bus, sometimes there are people waiting around who want to rent you a room while you're there....seems sketchy I know, but an Australian girl and I went in on it together and saw the room, and it was great. Great view, very clean, and maybe 18 euro a night. It's not a hostel but there were a couple of rooms with 2 people each. So if someone comes up to you in the bus station, don't immediately discount the idea.

The Rising Cock hostel is a blast! I stayed there for about a week in March 2005. Had the time of my life. Be prepared to party all night and sleep on the beach during the day. Lagos is a blast!

I stayed at a place like that with my friend. an Aussie and Kiwi  and two other Canadian guys. I loved it!! Hear the Rising Cock is a blast too though (the guy at the train station roped us in by saying the Rising Cock was condemned for sanitary reasons, which wasn't exactly true as it turns out!) Lagos is a blast!! Check out the Red Light (I think that's what it was called), and have a margarita at Whyte's!
