flying into dublin, ireland on jan 16th, and was wondering since the hostel openings seem to be immense during jan if i need to book online. is it any cheaper, more exp,? if not i'd rather see which one i like most since flights get in to dublin at like 7:30 am and i'll have plenty of time. really like the looks of litton lane, primarily because it claims to offer help finding residence and/or employment. is this a common thing or something they probably excel in(never stayed in an international hostel before)or just an article filler. seeing how the rate is approx. $3.00 more a night and i have no idea how long i want to be in dublin.

I would book the first night ahead of time, just to be assured that you have a place. And then if you like it, you can renew it once you're there.

I stayed at Barnacles Temple Bar hostel, which was by far the nicest one I've ever been in, but it comes at a cost. As for residence/employment, about half the people I met there were networking w/ other people there & the front deskers to hook themselves up with a job and a place to live - it seems to be fairly common.

I'm sure once U2Fan comes along to this thread, she'll have some great Dublin tips!

U2fan 12-17-2004 07:34 PM

Whoooo! I've been recommended!! I feel important now. B)

Well, I lived in Dublin for awhile but had an apartment so never stayed in a hostel.
However, I have heard very good things about both Kinlay House hostel and Avalon House hostel. They are both within walking distance of Temple Bar and various other places and I think they are on the airport bus route. But yeah, if you're going to be there awhile and in January, you're fine going w/o a reservation. I don't know how hard it is to find work under the table; the only thing I know is that people were having difficult finding legal work this past summer b/c most of the jobs were going to EU citizens. But let me know if you need anything else. And the bus from the airport was like 10 euro 2 years ago, so it's probably more now, but it is really useful and leaves every half hour or so and goes all over the place so chances are you can hop off somewhere close to where you're going. Or if you don't know where you're going, you can hop off somewhere central.

Can I come along in your suitcase?!!!

thanks for advice omisan but if u2fan is right i'll probably just check em out when i get there, oh and by the way i am straight up addicted to this whole couchsurfing.com thing, it makes my endless journey seem so much more feasible. i mean who better to help me find a job than a local who sleeps in the next room. i don't know, i mean their networking blows my mind :stoked: anyway, well i don't have to wait too much longer for my irish citizenship and passport(dad was born in roscrea) and then i'll be an eu citizen and well that's just the greatest thing since...since...well okay,so i don't know what, but if you imagine something really just emphatically great, and then imagine us both smiling ridiculously huge at each other until there's that kinda awkward silence, and well, you may not feel better, but it'll make me feel less weird.(i am sorta smiling all alone here, but that's okay, cause i know why i'm smilin', and...and.....and well okay so mama says i'm special)

I am rather surprised that with all the smokers over in Britain/Ireland etc. that they are ahead of the good ole USA in banning smoking in public places (i.e. bars). Smoking in general seems to be more accepted over there (but maybe that's an inaccurate perception that I have). I know some of the major US cities have banned it (NYC, Boston, etc.) but I would LOVE to see a nationwide ban. Not gonna happen anytime soon...but it would be nice. I HATE getting all smokey when I go out. :greenguy:

bellelass 12-22-2004 04:10 PM

nah, its more accepted. I noticed it when I was there before. The US is so. Puritanical. Oh wait, we were first settled by puritans.

yes yes I know the natives were here first but they didnt really help to form the current dominant culture.

beergal 12-23-2004 06:08 AM

its banned in Dublin, liverpool council have just passed their bill to ban smoking in rest's and pubs etc and it will prob go nationwide by 2006 (yipee! no more fag burns in my clothes!!!) smoking is dreadfully expensive here nearly $10 a packet thats why most people hop of to eu zone member countries, i think its expensive cos our government is greedy cos off all the taxes but im hoping its cos Britain is becoming more health (cough) conscious (ahem!) the majority of people that smoke here are the working classes so its all a big rip off!

omisan 12-23-2004 09:31 AM

Britain.. health conscious.. Hahaha.. what's next, the French passing legislation on humility? ;)

All kidding aside, I actually really like the indoor smoking ban in California. When you go to a lot of pubs & clubs, it's nice to be able to have a break and go outside into the cooler air to have a puff, instead of being trapped inside w/ the body heat of hundreds of people... Before, you couldn't get in/out of a nightclub, but since they passed the smoking ban, you can! Although, I have to admit, whenever I go to a country/state that allows smoking indoors, I take full advantage.

Globetrotters is FABULOUS. the breakfast is phenomenal, v. clean...and the people are really nice too. Not a far walk from the city centre. A little more off the beaten path but equally as impressive was the brewery hostel. Met a bunch of really nice people who were working there, came to visit in new york and everything!
Stay away from Paddy's Palace...it is NOT a palace at all.
If you are traveling around and plan on going to Dingle (which is soooo worth it) Make sure to stay at the Ballintaggart house. is is a 15 minute walk to town but at least stay there for a night, the atmosphere is amazing, real cozy...fireplace, big living room for fireside chats. I think about it all the time. can't wait to go back.

Leeser1112 12-26-2004 10:31 AM

Litton lane is partners with the Brewery hostel i think...
ask for Sacha. I am not sure if she is back in Australia yet...she might still be working there.

omisan 12-26-2004 03:54 PM

My roomies in Amsterdam couldn't stop bitching about the brewery hostel, but I think it's because they got roomed with the freaky German transvestite who was living there long-term... Their horror stories were priceless!
