Hi everyboy

just wondering if my man & I would need to book hostels in advance in europes winter season? (nov, dec & jan)

if so, would a couple of days advance be enough? we just have no idea where we will be or how long we want to stay

we will probably need to stay in dorms, very tight budget!

(we have xmas accom sorted

thanks heaps guys

This is a great question....I am also curious. I plan to be in southern europe between Jan1 - Jan21. Also: is there a difference between "youth" hostels and the regular?

Usually you will be fine not booking at this time of the year. However, if you are looking to stay at a certain hostel that might be popular, then booking a couple days in advance would be wise. Otherwise, since it is the off season, you should have plenty of choices.

I still usually book hostels the day before I get to the city just so that I have the peace of mind that I have a bed for the night and don't have to worry about walking around town looking for a place in the dead of winter with my luggage (yes, I bring a small suitcase on wheels, no backpack yet, but the suitcase does have straps on it to wear).

There is no difference between youth hostel and plain old hostel.

I agree with skid. The main travel season is during the spring-summer time, so winters are usually dead. You can book your first night in any city, just for peace of mind. Other than that, you shouldn't have a hard time finding a place to stay if you're winging it.

Like he said, even in the winter, booking ahead of time in a popular hostel is key, if you really want to stay there and experience it. The Barbieri hostel in Madrid was packed in January when my bro came out to visit me there. It's a top ten hostel.

Lately I had been crashing hostels in europe without a probelm. I think maybe its just a problem in bigger cities like London which is always booked.
Just be careful over weekends when hostels are the busiest the most and new years too.

I was in europe the past summer for four months and we did not reserve any hostels except in dublin. it worked out fine, sometimes it just takes a while to search it out. you will be fine in winter
