Renting a flat??

I think I could easily spend a whole month, maybe two in London. Right now I think my ideal trip would be to do southern spain for a week, the paris thing for a week or so, amsterdam for a week, scotland for a week (maybe longer if an aquantace will put me up and can get me in on some fowl hunting and salmon fishing) and then London untill I run out of cash (by a conservative estimate and assuming I don't have any major car repairs between then and now could take 2-4 months).

So..... I'm looking around and it seems like the average rent for a single room in a flat is 300 pounds per month with utilities included, some of these also specify you can rent by the month or two months rather than a year lease. If I allow for an average of 15 pounds per night for a hostel in london then any rent that is less than 450 a month means I'm saving money. Anyone done this before? Good experiences? Bad experiences? Ideas on best places to look up more of such ads?

I appreciate hearing any opinons on this matter.

I lived in England all summer and had friends living in a house and let me say, the room you are going to get will be TINY if you rent in London. I think the best way to do it and save money is to somehow meet up with someone who will share the room with you and then it becomes much much cheaper. I've found that the money I spent on the hostel was saved on the transportation (as I was staying in the centre of London rather than in the residential areas) Renting a room is great if you're not clostrophobic (sp?) but I feel with weekly or monthly rates at hostels and the savings in transportation it's really an even steven thing., just my two cents.

Thanks, thats definitly something to consider. I guess I would probablly only do it if I could luck into something cheap within zone 1,2, or 3. I did kind of forget about the transportation deal. And yeah, I pretty much expect a hole in the wall so luckily I'm not claustrophopic.

Oh since you lived there outside of the hostels let me ask a dumb question. When a single or double room is advertised what do they mean? a single or double bead or a room meant to sleep one or two people? Thanks.

Smart Hyde Park Inn- middle of london, right near the bayswater tube station, pubs, shopping and a grocery store. Its around $18 a night, cheaper than 15 pounds. I'm a big fan of the place.
