Well, 12 hours out, I'm probably too late. But yes, accomodation in Barcelona is very, very expensive. I would say it ranks up there with Venice, believe it or not!
One bit of advice, if you DO find someplace cheap, location isn't that important, as the subway is very easy to use and get around. I bought one of the multiday passes and it was easy.
Oh, and watch out for crime: There are lots of petty criminals snatching purses and lifting wallets. Of course, a couple of Aussie guys likely won't be targets.
All bad stuff aside, Barcelona is a cool city -- I loved it. If you want to meet some other travlas, there is a bar called The Travel Bar on the Rambla, well, off on a side street, actually. As for the Gaudi buildings, I loved La Pedrera. If you're going to go inside one building besides La Sagrada Familia, pick that one. And don't forget to go out on the roof and see all the cool stuff he did with the chimneys. Nice view, too.
