What should the best hostel have?!

As the title suggests I would like to know what you think the best hostel must have...

Friendly, involved staff and clean, hot showers. Wi-fi.

Think about Tiger Tim's. He's like the #1/#2 hostel in Budapest. While I personally think Tiger Tim's is overrated, in the reviews people ARE writing about how great Tim and his Australian flunkies are and NOT about dirty showers.

Lockers in the shared dorms (at least big enough to fit a laptop and camera). I had stuff stolen from shared dorms in Asia, so by the end of my trip I would only stay in them if they had lockers.

Also I agree with the WiFi, and a communal area with a TV and sofas.

Good times

In all seriousness I agree with Elizabeth that staff are very important I like staff that are friendly and knowledgable about the city.
Free wifi is never a bad thing and neither are lockers.
I also think that some sort of kitchen is very good so backpackers can make their own meals and a quiet section of the hostel for those who actually want to sleep.

Along with Wi-Fi some hostel computers are nice since I'm still in the stone age and own a desktop, which isn't very convenient for traveling. Other than that free breakfast is a huge plus and its never a bad thing if there is a bar to meet people in.

thats a good list so far, lets keep it going...

what about like organized group activities? like tours, bike rides, pub crawls, and other such activities? i've stayed a a few bars that offered some of these things while i was in Europe.

Lockers
Free coffee
Free breakfast
Free internet
Kitchen
Common area with bar or self serve beer cooler
No curfew

Thats all I hope for...

Charictor. A good hostel should be one you remember (in a good way) I remember the heart of gold in Berlin because of its funky decore and good music.

Whenever I was in the mood to party (always) I made sure the hostel had a bar. I found it far easier to meet people abd have a good time.

I can't stand hostels without at least a common area.

^^^ I agree, a hostel with a bar is the absolute best, as all you have to do is have a few beers, and before you know it, you have new travel friends, which OFTEN leads to an adventure!!!!!!!!!!

I like hostels that have private reading lights for each bed and also have little shelves that you can put your water, ipod etc...Makes my stay so much better!:)

Yep, a bar is always good. It makes meeting people super easy. I also like it when a hostel serves food. It just makes things so much simpler if you can't be arsed going out or making something. For most parts of the regularly travelled world, free wifi is a must in this day and age. If you're carrying anything of value, lockers are a necessity.
