Prague hostels more expensive than downtown Vancouver??
Hey all,
I am just going through the motions and doing some accommodation research. Heard a lot of good things about Sir Toby's in Prague, Czech Republic. But, I a cannot believe it: It (a hostel in Eastern Europe) is more expensive than the Samesun Hostel (I have stayed in), in downtown Vancouver....?!? What the hell? This is for late July that I am price checking, and wow. I cannot believe that Prague would be even in the same ballpark as Vancouver... one of the most expensive and developed cities in the world. comments?? |
Can you be more specific?
Looking at Sir Toby's website, a bed in their shared room with 4-6 beds, comes to just under $US 30 (doing the Czech Kroner to US Dollar conversion). Thats their most expensive shared room for the high season. What kinda room are you looking for exactly? And what prices are you seeing? |
I've been looking at hostels too since I'm visiting a lot of the same places you are in July. On hostelworld I couldn't find anything under $25 a night in Budapest or Prague. Was hoping to find decent hostels for under $20.

For tourism purposes, Prague is in the same league as Paris or London or Berlin, so people are willing (maybe not thrilled) to shell out the $$$. Also I think the Czech crown and Hungarian forint may be pegged to the euro (correct me if I'm wrong anyone), so this coupled with the fact that its high season is driving the prices up. For tourism and travelling purposes I personally consider Prague as western europe (Budapest, central).

I was also surprised at czech prices this time round. I remember last time paying the equivalent of 16 euros for a 6 bed room at the czech inn, this time I couldn't see anything for under 20... I did go in november last time, I understand that's a little different.

Actually Liz, the Czech crown is one of the few European currencies not tied to the Euro. But you are correct when you say for tourism-price purposes Prague might as well be in Western Europe, thats why the Crown (or Koruna) is trading so high against both the Euro and the Dollar.
