my mum and I stayed at the portland square hotel
http://www.portlandsquarehotel.com/
it's on 47th street, about half a block from times square and a very short walk to rockefeller centre. My mum was paying (yay!) so I'm not sure of the exact rates but I know we can't afford $270/night so it would have been less. I think we may have had some kind of special.
the rooms are very small but nothing about the place feels cheap or dingy, it's pretty fancy looking actually! (keep in mind that I'm used to hostels though!).
We did have a few slight problems there -
- the free wireless internet was down for 3 of the 5 days we were there
- they put us in a double room at first instead of twin, but I think that may have been mum not understanding the website!
- the main problem: When we left Portland Square to stay in greenwich village (we had wanted to split our time between the two areas), I discovered that I didn't have my toiletries bag. we called the hotel and talked to the manager, who went up to our room personally to check if it was there (good service...). the bag wasnt there, but he mentioned that he found a battery charger plugged into the wall and when I checked, I discovered that I had forgotten my camera charger. he said we could pick it up the next day (great service...). we go there the next day, and the manager isn't there and no one knows anything about a charger. (bad.) mum rang the next day and talked to the
same manager, who 'never found anything in the room'.(really bad). ? uhh, I didn't even know the thing was missing until he found it!
anyway thought I'd tell you that story because for that reason we weren't too happy with the staff, but the actual hotel itself is in an awesome location and the price was pretty good.
oh, and I found my toiletries when I got back to sydney, they were in my bag all along! haha.
