Default New York - Cheap Hotels near Rockefeller Center?

So i'm planning a trip to new york with my mom for december this year. we are looking to get the classic new york experience but not trying to spend an arm and a leg. we looked at some hotels near rockefeller center but couldn't find anything under $270 a night. this trip has been a dream of my mothers for years and she wants to see a broadway show and ice skate in rockefeller center. i know it will be an expensie trip, but saving on hotel would be grand. any help from the weathered travelers here?

most greatfully,
-beth

my mum and I stayed at the portland square hotel http://www.portlandsquarehotel.com/
it's on 47th street, about half a block from times square and a very short walk to rockefeller centre. My mum was paying (yay!) so I'm not sure of the exact rates but I know we can't afford $270/night so it would have been less. I think we may have had some kind of special.
the rooms are very small but nothing about the place feels cheap or dingy, it's pretty fancy looking actually! (keep in mind that I'm used to hostels though!).
We did have a few slight problems there -
- the free wireless internet was down for 3 of the 5 days we were there
- they put us in a double room at first instead of twin, but I think that may have been mum not understanding the website!
- the main problem: When we left Portland Square to stay in greenwich village (we had wanted to split our time between the two areas), I discovered that I didn't have my toiletries bag. we called the hotel and talked to the manager, who went up to our room personally to check if it was there (good service...). the bag wasnt there, but he mentioned that he found a battery charger plugged into the wall and when I checked, I discovered that I had forgotten my camera charger. he said we could pick it up the next day (great service...). we go there the next day, and the manager isn't there and no one knows anything about a charger. (bad.) mum rang the next day and talked to the same manager, who 'never found anything in the room'.(really bad). ? uhh, I didn't even know the thing was missing until he found it!
anyway thought I'd tell you that story because for that reason we weren't too happy with the staff, but the actual hotel itself is in an awesome location and the price was pretty good.
oh, and I found my toiletries when I got back to sydney, they were in my bag all along! haha.

Try doing a check of expedia...and sort the hotels by price in NYC and you will get a bunch of 1* hostels as well as hotels on the cheaper side. Since you are traveling with your mom you may want to steer clear from hostels (though I have no idea what kinda traveller she is!) It is NYC in December (the busiest time of year for tourism) so the prices will be inflated somewhat. Also keep in mind just because the attractions are all in a certain area (times square for instance) the subway system there is excellent and you will be able to hop on a subway and get to anywhere you need to go from whatever hotel you stay in!

The Gershwin Hotel looks like an option, but I can't tell if they offer any rooms with double beds. It's actually a strange little hotel that has everything from suites to dorms. www.gershwinhotel.com

The NY Times has a website with hotel listings:
http://travel.nytimes.com/travel/gui...-listings.html

You might want to consider something outside of Manhattan if you have trouble finding something in your price range. If you can find something close to manhattan near a metro stop your commute wouldn't be bad.

The Hotel Edison which is 47th between B'way & 8th is usually a decently priced hotel. It's clean and well-kept. Lots of international travelers since it is affordable (but not a dump like some hotels in Manhattan).
