T-Punk Intel on Hostels!!!
 

Alright so Ive made it official!!! I booked my tickets yesterday...May 21st im out like a fat kid in dodge ball to Europe!!!!:thumbup: So far my plans as far as hostels go are......London: the Generator......Amsterdam: The Flying Pig....and Interlaken: Balmers

I need some suggestions still for Paris, Berlin, Munich, and Rome. Cleanliness is always a plus but a good atmosphere is a MUST!

Try a search :) There've been lots of threads about hostel recommendations for those cities.

My choice for Paris: BVJ Louvre - not super social, but the location cannot be beat. And no lockout, which is crucial in Paris.

i stayed a night at the flying pig and a few at bobs...i preferred bobs..i thought flying pig was overpriced...cool...but way overpriced

Paris seems like the hardest to make recommendations for.

The Wombat in Munich probably the best hostel I went to in Europe (across from the train station, central to the underground, within 15 minutes of the Main square)

I stayed at the Pop Inn in Rome which is next to the train station but I don't really recommend it.

Paris is a tough one!!!!

I stayed in the Meininger city hostel in Munich. It was ok, right across from an amazing authtentic German restaurant. Also the breweries were right near by so it smelled nice. But I've heard that Wombats is a very fun hostel to be at.
I acutally wasn't a big fan of Balmers, but there aren't alot of of other options in Interlaken. There were too many toolish Americans and Canadians, I wanted to meet Europeans.
In Rome we stayed at a place called Three Ducks or something. It was kinda hard to find. I thought it was in a nice place tho, because it was like 3 blocks north of the main train station. There weren't many people staying there, and there was no central place to meet up.... Iguess I don't have help there, just don't go there from what seems to be your desires in a hostel.

wombats is great in munich. we stayed two nights at A&O in berlin and hated it, the rest of the time we spent at east7 which we really liked but it was pretty quiet. it was great for us because we were with friends but as they dont have a bar, its probably not the best place to meet people. the people at wombats in vienna told us that there were plans to open one in berlin but i'm not sure if that's happened yet. it's worth checking out though, they're good hostels

In Rome there is a problem with hostels (from what I have been told) because the Hospitality Houses runned by Roman Catholic religious orders have the best places and provide the best services for your money. If you are in Rome for a few days, stay in one of these houses for at least one night even if you are not religious. It is different than a hostel and they tend to be closer to the main attractions.

BigE, How do you find the hospitality houses?

Very clean and good food. Quiet and very helpful. Problem is that many of the hospitality houses close their doors at night - some as early as 9 and others as late as 10 or 11, a few at 12. If you are walking around and sight seeing all day, you will be tired at the end of the day and it is not that big of a deal. If you are more interrested in night clubs and getting laid, the hospitality houses are not going to work. Depends on what you are looking for.

Word of advice: Romans look down on drunkeness. They will not let you in a lot of places if you have had too much to drink. I encourage you to enjoy the wine (the table wine is some of the best I ever had) but know your limits.

in paris if you dont mind ALOT of stairs hostel coulaincourt (sp) is pretty goodpro: free internet, con: its a crappy kiosk type thing that wont let u open up any messengerspro: close to the metro, con: if you come out the wrong side you have to walk up alot of stairs (i meant to take a pic but i forgot trust me its alot)the hostel has the ground floor then 3 floors above it and 3 floors below that, bringing the bag up is not fun as you might imagineright now they are doing renovations so the place looks a little shabbybreakfast included cereal, orange juice, toast, some bread, a croissantthey need to get their reservations and whatnot straightened out though because when i arrived they assigned me to a room that was already full!overall i would recommend this placemunich...im currently at wombats ill let you know how it is

I second this choice. And it can be social, but usually very late at night.

There will be a lot of kids on school trips, though.

I liked the yellow hostel in rome. I've def. stayed in better hostels, but there was just something about the place. I loved most of the staff and i met a ton of top people there. Close to the train station and metro stations. If you stay there, try out the pub crawl if dustin's running it. The guy is quality. Oh and I heard they were turning the restaurant they owned downstairs into a bar so that could be good.

In paris I stayed in woodstock hostel. It was over christmas, but it was definitely a party place. I met so many awesome people, we had parties in the kitchen every night. I randomly met 4 guys from there again on new years day in amsterdam, early morning in the trainstation. Lots of fun.It is near the sacre cour and montmarte/ the moulin rouge in the red light district. I think you'll be using the metro a lot in paris anyway so not being in the actual centre is no biggie. It was kind of small and dirty but I think that is paris hostels in general.In Berlin I stayed at the Meininger hostel. There was a bar built on the side but the main reason I liked it besides being only like 10 euros a night and having ensuite bathrooms in the dorms, was the amazing breakfasts! Sliced meats and cheeses, several cereals, yoghurt, breads and buns, juices, 5 jams or so, hot chocolate...all you can eat. Yummy.

In Rome, I booked at the Funny Palace. It is alittle bit more pricey but was rated #1 in Lonely Planet I think... or one of those books. It is about 3 blocks from Termini and has all the good amenities like a locker, no lock out, etc. I of course can't say for sure how good it is because I wont be there until June ;). It looked nice though! I also considered the Yellow Hostel which I also heard through the grapevine was good. I think it is near the same price bracket as Funny.

What time in June will you be in rome??

in rome the yellow hostel and the hostel allessandro are both great, literally around the corner from each other. both clean, the allessandro has a bar and the yellow hostel is super super clean with a tv room and whole heap of dvds. and a kitchen, which is great.

paris is a massive struggle. i'm finding it really hard and this is my third time there! last time i stayed at caulaincourt, which, as has been mentioned, is up a lot of stairs. of more annoyance is probably the fact that it's in montmartre, which is cute and has a village-feel, but it's right up the top of paris, and you're looking at a long metro ride home. nonetheless it was clean etc. and the owners were really nice, and i totally took advantage of the croissant breakfast. still, i'd rather stay in the marais/latin quarter/st germain etc so i'm almost at the point of staying in a hotel. le village looks ok but it has an 11-4 lockout.

I stayed at M&J in Rome, which was near Yellow Hostel and train station, but the area is really boring, so it kinda sucked.

For rome, my advice would be to find a more centrally located place... from termini station to walk to spanish steps took like half an hour, if I remember.
