I've used both couchsurfing and hospitalityclub for both hosting and surfing and it really is a fantastic experience. It can sometimes be difficult to find a host, espiecally if you don't arrange it at least a few weeks in advance, but most of the time it's worth the hassle, espiecally if you're in a country where not many people speak English as the hosts generally do.
