Maybe try a hardware store for heavy duty earplugs. At my work I use earplugs that are much better than the ones you get for sleeping.

I know even in drugstores they sell different 'strengths' Some block out say 10-15 db and others are stronger and work for... say 25 or 30 db. That should be pretty sufficient I would think.
You can spend a lot of money on earplugs if you want to. It all depends on your priorities and what types of sound you're trying to block out. If it's the screaming child on an airplane, I'll suffer either without them at all or with cheap hardware store ones since it's only a limited amount of exposure time anyway. But headphones and music do wonders for that, so there you go.
