Just a useful tip i found quite effective:
when you absolutely must put down a bag of anysort whether it be a purse, day pack, or your gear pack, put it down then step you leg(s) into the strap that way if someone tries to quickly snatch it they'll be unsucessful, however if you have the bulk of the bag behind you they could knock you over so be sure to place the bag so the bulk of the bag is infront of you.

That works very well. I do it everytime i put my pack down in front of me on the train or where ever. The same goes for holding smaller bags on your lap. Wrap it around your forearm. Its easier to sleep when you know any that no one is going to take your bags with out taking you with it.

Yep, that's a great tip. I do that all the time wherever I am and whatever bag I happen to be carrying with me, it's just instinct now. My travel daypack is kind of a small messenger bag thingie that has a long enough strap to put crosswise over my chest and then sit on my hip with my arm over it just in case pickpocketers try to bring their weakass shit. I highly recommend doing this whenever possible.
