what do you guys do with your moneybelt when you're at the beach, showering, etc.? i usually travel alone so leaving it with a friend isn't an option.

Damn good question. I leave in 2 weeks and just started wondering about this. I am going to have that thing super glued to my ass whenever possible, but the water? I am guessing most hostels have lockers, so that should take care of the shower thing....but the beach....bury that shit maybe.

The rule of thumb is to carry a photocopy of your essentials with you when you're on an excursion, and keep the actual pieces in the front desk safe at your hostel (if they have one) or otherwise in your locker... Some countries require that you have your "papers" with you at all times, but usually a photocopy is fine - if you get in any sort of trouble, you can always say "hey, look, all the stuff is back at ______ hostel."

That's a great tip Omi! I was wondering how to carry around two passports... I'll definately be making photo copies of all my documents. Thanks again!

Unfortunately I learned Omi's lesson the hard way last week. I was staying at a hostel in New Zealand and left my belt hidden (I thought ) in my bag while I went to the showers. In the twenty minutes I was gone someone managed to make off with $200NZ from me and a watch from one of the other guys in the room.
Lesson- If you want it, lock it up. And, don't take out more money then you need at the time.

For while in the shower if you don't want to leave it in your locker then you can always put it in a ziploc bag (or anyother waterproof container) and take it in the shower with you.

Freakin amazing idea. I never thought of that because most of the places I stayed in had lockers and such or "trusted people" which could have ended badly, but what would a polite Montrealer on her way through Europe to World Youth Day be doing stealing my shit?

Ive heard of underwear getting stolen while people were in the shower, so I wouldnt put it past anyone to steal a wallet or a nice piece of clothing.

Easy way to prevent it-- ever seen someone sew some cash into the lining of a jacket? or pants?
I always keep a couple bucks and a checkcard in my shoe.

I'm a paranoid type of girl myself. I havn't had any chance to go to beach on any of my walkabouts but as far as showering goes I have a little trick for the hostels that don't have lockers.
I kept most of my toiletries and also my medkit in small tupperware containers. So, before getting in the shower I'd remove all that I needed from the tupperware and put my moneypouch inside it and sealed it. Then I just showered with the tupperware at my feet.
Yes . . . yes . . I am actually that paranoid.

I could honestly see myself doing that... Now the question is... How much space does the tupperware take in a backpack?
Anyhow for the beach... I'd probably leave it in a safe at the desk and if they didn't have one put it in a locker... Just like everyone else said I feel so unoriginal...

at my work we sell cd tins - they are the same size as a cd case, but stronger and waterproof (well, showerproof - i wouldn't put it through the washing machine and expect the contents to be dry). conveniently, they are just big enough for a passport and some cash. it wouldn't take up much room and you could just sit it against the wall in the shower. just remember to take it with you when you leave the shower!!!!
btw i work at a fabric store so its heaps random that we actually sell these, I'm not sure where else you could get them

Why not just take a ziplock bag (or if you're like me, a dry bag with a lanyard on it?) and stick with that?
When we hit the hot springs in Costa Rica, I put my wallet in a locker, but had cash and my smokes in a dry bag on a leash around my neck. Have had it for a while, used to use it jet-skiing... and it kept my Camels dry! :D

A couple of years ago at glastonbury a friend of mine had underwear with a zip pocket in them. they had a name but a cant remember what they were called. but it seemed like a good idea.
he still managed to get wasted and lose all his money though
