This verdict was just announced.

9 pounds of marijuana were found concealed in her boogie board bag. She maintains that it was planted there by baggage handlers in Australia.

Read the details-

This reminds me of the stories that I've heard or read that when you meet someone while on your travels, and they ask you to "hold or carry" something for them as you're enroute to another country (in a plane, bus, train, etc...), <span style=\'color:red\'>BE CAREFUL AND USE YOUR WITS!!!

It doesn't seem that she has any real evidence to support her claim (at least not in the article). That would sure suck if she is telling the truth.

Yea, my Australian friend told me about this. Apparently someone out some pot in this girls bag when she wasn't looking back in Sydney and she's been in an Indonesian prison for 8 months already. 90% of Australians think she's innocent is what the news there said and it's pretty obvious she is.

Do you guys know if the Australian government can do anything to get her out?

That sucks sssoooo much though, holy crap, Indonesian prison i'm sure is absolute hell!

I was in oz when this whole thing happened, most ppl over there think that she's not guilty.

It's a crazy situation. I actually believe that she is not guilty. I've read a lot of articles about her, she just doesn't "seem" to be that stupid. Imagine though., just imagine what it would be like if served a 20 yr sentence. if you knew that you were not guilty. My stomach goes in rollercoasters just thinking about it!

Though if she did do the smuggling then touche.

The government is trying to see if they can do a prisioner transfer. So they basically just switch countries. If anything at least it will be better serving the sentence in Australia!

If she does get sent back to Australia, will they be able to re-try her and release her from jail?

In my last post I forgot to add that it's thought that corrupt baggage handlers at Sydney airport put the pot in her bag.

Why does everyone here (Oz) assume she's innocent ? The media here put so much spin on everything, that i'm not surprised. She may or may not be guilty. A trial says she is - isnt it up to us to respect that decision ?

If i were going to smuggle drugs, I'd put them in an unlocked bag and say they werent mine too :P

BOTH the prosecution AND the defence are appealing - the former because 20 years is too lenient (in terms of indonesian precedent, it is fairly light), the latter because, well, its their job to try and get her off.

Oh and the 'evidence' that the drugs were placed by baggage handlers was just hearsay and wouldnt be admissible in an Australian court either.

Sorry for venting - i'm just annoyed with all the biased coverage thats been spammed at us for the last 8 months.

And the lesson to be learned is - Lock your bags when travelling :P

In the states, well LAX and other airports that I've been to here, you have to unlock your bag when you check them in. Otherwise, they can and most likely will, cut them open to search inside.
It happens to me and my gf everytime. Just walking through the metal detectors is such a laborious process too, now. Take off your shoes, belt, empty your pockets, unlock your bags, show that your cell phone can turn on (so it isn't just a case to smuggle something inside), take off your jacket....walk through. Then, like every other person (beep or no metal detector beep) gets picked to go to the guy standing next to a table to do a throrough exam of you, your bag, and whatever else. Sheesh...

.....can't wait for the "beam me up, scotty" days to arrive :greenguy: .

This has received so much coverage here. There is so many stories, rumours and theories floating around it's hard to make a judgement. I do agree with Wyzfen in the fact the media has been biased in her favour. I don't really want to say that much more - I've had enough of it and it seems it's going to continue for some time with appeals etc.

don't forget that the media only lets us hear the bits of evidence that they want us to hear.

like why haven't we heard more about the bali 9?
sure theyre guilty " officer I didn't know i had drugs stuck to my stomach"
but we still don't know the whole story, and we never will as were not in the courtroom to hear ALL the evidence.

i don't think they can retry her if she's already been found guilty by another country's legal system - thats just not possible
the transfer would just mean she would return to australia and spend the 20 years in the australian prison system, rather than the indonesian prison system.

i heard though in bali - you can bribe your way thorugh everything, they even let you buy drugs, and buy a day out in the public with your family - but i agree 20 years, thats a whole life, you'd be changed forever

apparently a luggage handler placed the drugs in her luggage - which is scary if you think about it. getting framed - but yeh hard to say if shes guilty or not with all the media propoganda

If she IS guilty, then 20 years is a fantastic result - the other two options she had were LIFE in prison, or DEATH.

I know which i'd rather of the three.

Why would she bring pot worth $20,000 in Sydney to Bali where it's worth $4,000?

And a former employee on Qantas admitted that there is a drug smuggling ring in the Australian airports. Back in 2002 when this was the big thing there was 1 person who admitted it and the invesitgators were on the way to his house after he called in and when the investigator walked in the front door the guy was dead.

So, I beleive she's innocent!

I haven't looked into this myself, but I heard her dad's a cokehead and...wouldn't you notice if your luggage was all-of-a-sudden 9 LBS heavier? Just color me a lil' bit skeptical here so far...

But, I'll stay open to whatever facts they bring out.

I have wondered that myself with other arrests. You see them say "a truckload of marijuana with a street value of 1.8 million" but what actually happens to all of that? They never tell you that part. I figure it gets held for a while for case evidence against a person... and then?

what i dont understand is, if she was set-up, why would some drug dealer, blatantly risk getting 9lbs confiscated by putting a pillow sized lump of buds in a random persons bag...they are obviously not very good at concealing the stash! wouldnt you break it down into smaller quantities?

also, if she did accept to be a drug mule, then why would you go thru customs with a pillow sized lump of buds? you would have to be a complete dumbass to think that you could get away with such a big lump in a normally quite flat body board bag... confusing really
