what i dont understand is, if she was set-up, why would some drug dealer, blatantly risk getting 9lbs confiscated by putting a pillow sized lump of buds in a random persons bag.

Maybe it is a matter of playing the odds. Sure all your eggs are in one basket but the chance of x amount in 25 people getting caught might be higher than your one person solo. Also was she traveling alone, maybe the figured if it was a single woman traveling alone then she would be easier to scare into giving it back or easier to rob her when they got to the destination?
Just a thought.

Sorry, sounds a bit too fishy for me to believe considering there are claims of baggage handlers doing all sorts of stuff to luggage including planting drugs and stealing your stuff on inpection.
This being said, I'd like to know why the baggage handling area isn't under constant camera watch in Oz. Simple way to prevent the theft and planting issue.
Secondly, WTF does someone smuggle 9 freaking pounds of weed on a vacation in a backpack?!?!? Thats a huge chunk of space taken up in a bag.
Sorry, the stories don't add up. I seriously doubt this girl was stupid enough to voluntarily do this, and its likely that the Indonesian govn't is using her as an examply, possibly to stem the tide of Oz kids coming to visit... or at least show who's in charge here.
You do not want to go to jail. Especially in a foreign, Muslim country!!

I'm of the opinion that it's simply too fishy all around. Why would you smuggle pot into Indonesia, where it is worth less than where you came from? Any drug ring worth its salt wouldn't be smuggling to lose money!
The luggage would have been weighed on the way in... usually recorded as well, cause they need to know weight and balance when loading the plane... 4 kilos appearing suddenly would be noticeable, and any lawyer worth his salt would have picked up on that...
I try to make up excuses to get out of traffic tickets, so I think that facing drug smuggling charges might give me incentive to lie... "That's not mine... someone must have planted it"
With as much attention that is paid to it, I'm certain that the Australian gov't did some serious investigating of the airport baggage handlers, too...
I have a feeling she might just be guilty as charged.
- btw, on the "search you at the airport" thing... If you think that's bad, try working with explosives for a living... everything I own has traces of explosives on it... I swear I've been stripped more times than Pamela Anderson!

I was in Brisbane International airport the other day (where Corby departed Australia from), and it was amazing to see the people who wrap your bags in plastic making such a good trade. I think everyones gone into panic mode.
What i wanna know is how hard would it be to get those layers of plastic off your backpack :D
