Malaria in South America

I will be in Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia for two months and was wondering about Malaria treatment, will I have to take medication all the time?

I guess it depends where I go because there will be times when I'll be trekking above 4000m when I believe they'll be no mosquitos?

Do people just continue with medication anyway even if they are not in affected parts? I know some anti-malarials require 4 weeks after leaving.

I guess I am just worried about taking medication for so long! Especially as I have suffered side effects with larium and doxy!

I wasn't in Central America that long, but people advised me to get on the malaria meds, considering mosquitos find me unusually tasty. But, well, I totally forgot, and I came out alright. In fact, a lot of the long-term SA/CA travelers I met said they weren't on malaria pills - one girl told me she was, but it made her sick so she quit.. So I dunno - I'd consult with a doctor, rather than just using anecdotal evidence like this
