So there you are standing in the hostel or hotel lobby in Bangkok, you just wanna crash your so tired, when you hear the guy at the desk yell out " Ms.(insert name here) room # 123 is ready for you....
Well now every goofball and wierdo now knows what room your in, you may want to seriously consider leaving that place and finding another.
The last thing you need is an unexpected guested knocking on your door at 3am, or having to deal with a moron who just does not understand the works FUC OFF!!!!

When you are going to a religious site, you should allways keep a scarff with you, you may need to cover your head to enter that site. When a friend of mine went to the Vatican, she was not aloud into buildings because of her sleavless shirt, she had to go by a VERY expencive shirt from a vendor in the area.

If your looking for attention, than wear what ever you want, but if your tring to remain low key in the male dominated country your treking through, just remember what your wearing, the less you wear the more attention you get. For example, in India a womans upper are is a sensual part of the body, and in the Pacific Islands a womans thigh is a sexual part of the body.

Good advice!

I´ve heard that in Singapore they also make women wear a certain type of clothing before entering temples and shrines. Can´t remember what, specifically. It´s good to do a little research online, for entry requirements, before actually heading out to the site itself- especially in religious countries.

As for handling the late-nite wierdos, they´re nothing that a good swiss army knife can´t handle :D

Hows it going
I remeber when I went to the vatican, they are so damn itchy about what your wearing, basicly go in a snow suit and you should be good lol, but the less are you show the better, good thing I had some cloathes on me I just changed right there in front of a few hundred people and I was proud to show off my simpsons boxers mwahaha. Worst thing was I was waering pants and long sleeved shirt and it was like 43 degrees that day, I was soooooo wet but its so worth it. If you ever wanna feel unimportant visit the Vatican. lol

Hmm yeah, of all my concerns, this one is up there, traveling solo as a girl.
the paranoid person in me was wondering if i should dress more conservatively. not that i dress anywhere near like christina aguilera or pam anderson, but i live in tube tops/tanks and i hate wearing a bra. (pardon if too much info)

ive heard that australia is like SUPER safe though, but still.

AND wouldnt ya know it, curse me for being cute on top of that. hehheh. im being facetious, please no hating.

so my equally paranoid pals suggest i get pepper spray once i get there, but i think that's a bit too much.

??

katdawg...Australia is quite a safe place but like anywhere you're best not to get complacent about your safety.

Keep your wits about you and stay away from dark areas with few people at night and you'll be fine. Pepper spray would be going a touch over the top but hey, if it makes you feel safer then why not.

I know that I get attention when I wear tank tops with no bra. I suppose that is rather normal since I'm a guy. However, I don't wear them too much because it gets awefully distracting to be fending off the droves of horned up women that molest me every time I go outside. :P :P

And a tip for the lone lady travelers: If a creepy chump is following you around and he doesn't leave you alone when asked, just roundhouse kick him in the testicles and that should delay his advances. It's an oldie, but goodie.

Hey Katdawg!

No problem, we TP girls are all confident about the way we look, so we won't hate you just because you are pretty and wear no bra! Hahahah! Isn't it true Dio!?

About travelling alone and being a girl...Well...Men are all the same, all over this Planet...What saves me most of the time is to look very confident. Walk with your head up! If you look like a victim, then they'll think you are one! You have to act like your ten body builder friends are waiting for you just around the corner! Hahaha! B) I think you can dress the way you want, as long as you don't look like a local prostitute!

I always carry a Swiss Army knife around, and it may be stupid, but it gives me confidence! If a guy attacks me, I'll just put it right to his troath, eyes or balls!

yeeeeah! of course i pity the fool who tries to mess with me, he'd be missing a left nut when all's said and done. but it sounds like so much work, ripping said part out, might break a nail ...and id rather be enjoying my travels!

mocassin: i like the way you think missy. rest assured, i will not look like local prostitute. will aim for respectably sexy cool (tis a girl's right to be cute, no?)

paulo: maybe your boobies are so big that you have to fend all those guys off when u go braless. i don't have that problem. much.

cliffo: all excellent points, do intend to keep wits down under.

Zing!

Although, I think I can speak for my fellow menfolk when I point out that they probably don't find my hairy boobies attractive.

And Moc, Swiss Army knife?, I would reccomend something a little more substantial. What are you going to do, tweezer them into submission? :D However, I bet jabbing a dude with that corksrew attachment could be pretty effective.

I really wouldn't reccommend stabbing anybody with a swiss army knife, mainly because there is no finger guard to stop your hand from sliding forward over the blade during said stab. Or, there a way to keep the blade from folding back up into your fingers. But, if it is all you have, use sideways/diagonal slashing motions. Much more effective anyhow.

And no, I am not a derranged axe murderer. Sorry if my post is a bit violent. And I know y'all are kinda joking about the SA knife thing.

Just trying to spread some potentially useful knowledge...and some potentially funny humor.

Paulo, Paulo...

You haven't seen my SA knife! The blade is as long as my hand! The handle is curved to accomodate the fingers, and there is also a device to prevent the blade from folding back...Hahahah! Paulo, I've cut TREES down with this blade, when my truck was stuck in the woods: we sometimes drove directly ON the trees, when we didn't feel like walking, or when we had an accident and flew into the trees, the truck jacked (is this the right word?) on them! Hahahahh!

And believe me, I'm not kidding...I've been carrying this blade for 6 years, I walked miles to get it back when it fell down from my pocket in the woods! It was my protection against bears and wolfes!!! There really is a love strory between him and me! And stabbing with the awl thing would probably be effective too, since it is at a 90 degrees angle from the handle...I'd go for an eye with it...

And baby, I'm sure your boobies look just right!

Okay Moc, once again I stand corrected. That is quite a shapely piece of equipment you got there.

I know what you mean when you talk about how much you love your knife. I still have my SA Knife from my (don't laugh) Cub Scout/Boy Scout days. Which would mean it is about 15 years old.

If you get a truck stuck in something to where the wheels no longer contact the ground, it is 'high centered'. But 'jacked' works too. That is why it is a good idea to carry boards in the vehicle when off-roading.

And thanks for the kind comments about my breasts. I get kinda self-conscious about them sometimes. lol

Just act like your the biggest meanest bitch in the world (works for me and I don't have to act that much! ) Your nevous now, but once you start travelling you'll forget all those feelings and the new katdawg will emerge! A fiercer, more indepedant one. You'll be changed for the good.

Yep!
Me and my girlfriend in Greece, we had to fight off greeks, italians, australians, and even gay men, you name it...

Hahahah! Well, the 2 gay men we met outside a bar told us they would show us some really cool bars...We trusted them (they said they were gay, and 50% of the guys on this island are gay!) and followed them around the tiny streets, they took us to another crowded bar...Then they went to the bar to buy us a drink, and talking to each other we realized maybe they were NOT gay after all! They were asking us things like 'are you bisexual' and holding our arms like we were really good friends. Oh well...We used the crowd to disapear while they were trying to buy us a beer, and ran off! Hahah!

We were actually getting good at that game! Two italian guys were always asking us to come to their hotel room: 'I chief, I cook for you...Pizza, spaghetti...Come tonight to my hotel'. Hahahhah! Picture this: two italian guys in a Speedo, driving a scooter.... :D We told them we would meet them at the beach at midnight, but we just didn't show up...Guess what?! They didn't understand what that meant!!! We met them in a bar the day after, and they were so desperate to get us to their hotel that they offered us a glass of water! Mouhahhaahhaahah!

So, my point is, yep! Guys are the same EVERYWHERE! Hahahah!

I shall relate one particular experience I had with a nasty guy in Oslo, Norway. We met on a tram heading to the same tram stop (sinsenkrisset- at the bottom of the hill from the HI hostel) near his home. He seemed okay enough but I still didn't trust him. I didn't tell him where I was staying but it was obvious.

The next morning I awoke to a knock on my door. It was him! Whatever idiot was working reception sent him up to my room! Thinking back I really should have let them have it.

so, long story short, the guy began stalking me. He'd follow me in the city and back to my hostel. I finally just left the country to get away from him.

a couple of months later I ended up back in Oslo to visit family (whom I had no prior knowledge of) when I found myself walking through the city and about 100 yards ahead of me stood THE STALKER!!! He looked PISSED. The super-hero in me wanted to run up to him and beat him to the ground but I realized that even a bruised hand (ya know, from all the ass whoopin') would serve as an inconvenience to my travels.

I pretended not to see him and headed immediately in the direction of the tourist information office. I figured that if he followed me into there then I'd know he was up to no good and i could get some sort of authority figure involved.

I'd recommend making a mental note of some sort of "safety zone" such as a tourist office (yes, I said the "t" word), an embassy (even if it's not your country), etc. Someplace where the locals don't normally hang out.

crazy shit, LM

Thanks for the advice in finding a "safety zone!" It's a good idea to create/find one of these zones, where you know that you could get immediate help, as soon as you enter each city that you are unfamiliar with :greenguy:
