Read somewhere about this. How some countries had a problem if you took pictures of their public phones. Anyone heard anything about this?

Yeah, I took a picture of a NYC payphone and the po-lice put a broomstick up my ass. Then they apologized, said they thought I was Haitian.

The national Hacker magazine, 2600, The Hacker Quarterly has traditionally featured photos of payphones from different countries as a regular piece.
Since the early days of hacking, payphones were the original way that they used to hide their locations and activities. Phreaking, which is essentially stealing phone time, was a common adjunct to hacking...
The tie-in between old-school hacker nostalgia and payphones coupled with the 2600 featuring photos of payphones worldwide is probably where this urban legend came about...
I know of no countries that photographing payphones is illegal.

Ahhhh good old 2600... I remember reading that back in the day. Back during the days of BBS's, cheating tones, boxes of every color.. black, blue, red, green, etc. Radio Shack was the one stop shop to getting any service for free.
