Hey everybody I need some input. I am planning on getting a working holiday visa later this year and hitting the road. There are two choices as far as where I am going. Either Britain/Ireland or Australia. Both are about dead on even as far as being places I want to visit. Getting visas are easy for both as well. My sister is backpacking through Oz right now and loves it. The flight to Britain and Ireland is cheaper than Australia but the cost of living is cheaper in Australia so as far as finances, they are pretty even too.
So my question, simple show of hands if you will...
Do I go with:
Britain and Ireland
Or
Australia?
The Hugh Grants and Colin Farrells of the world?
Or the Heath Legers and Keith Urbans??
Thoughts?

Australia, because that's where i live. Enough said.
ummm....well, if you go to britain you've got all of europe at your front door. However, there's also some wicked things to see in oz. Guess it depends on how much of your current savings you want to spend. Your savings would get you 3 times as far in oz, but if you will be working i guess it wouldn't matter that much.
That's my 2 cents.

I say Oz...this crappy exchange rate with the pound can't last forever. Hit the countries where we're not getting hammered on, now, I say...

Hmmm... making the assumption you're from the US/Canada, I say Oz. If you can spare the extra cash to fly there and have the time and ambition to travel there, then defintely go for it. Plus, they have kangaroos. Haha, anyhow, going to the UK from said areas relatively cheap (flights/packages) and "safe" (mentally). It doesn't seem as exotic so it may be easier to travel there later on. If you pass up Oz, who knows when/if you'd be able to make it back?

very true.........it's a lot easier to make the jump from NA to europe than to Oz later in your life. I vote Oz as well. (of course if you can, try to make the jump over to NZ as well. bloody gorgeous up there.

If I do decide on Australia (and it seems like most think I should!) then I would definately trek over to NZ for a visit. Financially it does seem to make more sense as the Canadian and Australian dollar are almost the same. And I checked on how many pounds I could get for $20 canadian and it is only 8!!! My money would disappear fast!!!
I think I may be leaning toward Oz right about now...

You should also think about whether you want to spend your time more in the country, or in urban areas, and what type of country strikes your fancy more. I'm unfamiliar with what kind of variety of country or urban scenes is to be had down under, but I'd go with UK because I like green spaces and forests, and the urban scene there is more appealing to me, especially with the rest of Europe being just a eurostar away!
