I love everything Wiki, Wiki + travel is even better!
Right now I'm working on editing the Wilmington (North Carolina) Wiki. When I found it, it was just a frame of an article. It still needs a lot of improvement though. I hope to get it up to star quality (so far there is only one article to have achieved this status).

Awesome. Now I've got another thing to occupy my time when there's nothing new to read on TP.
Welcome Jon! First post I see.

Scanning the internet recently, I stumbled across a Wikipedia site called WikiTravel. It is an online wiki guidebook, utilizing the wikipedia technology. It already has a significant base on which to build articles from, with over 8000 guidebook locations around the world. Many of these articles are great, but several are lacking and some are just plain sad. This wikipedia encyclopedia has gained popularity as it is now linked to most of the OFFICIAL wikipedia entries for locations worldwide. I suggest that we, backpackers, and ANY other backpackers that we know, start a project to breathe life into WikiTravel. It has the potential to be an EXTREMELY valuable backpacker resource, and it is our way of providing vital tools for our community. It also can help raise possible communities for backpackers to visit, allowing us to do those towns that may go unmentioned in bigger gudebooks a great favor. I have already begun by editing the entry for my hometown, and now I am working on countries that I have visited. Personal experience will help MANY of you develop articles for some of your favorite locations throughout the world. It is less strict on the neutral point of view thing, so there is plenty of room for you to provide people with ideas for a good time.
check it out! http://wikitravel.org/en/Main_Page

Hmm. Nothing against WikiTravel, but everything you're describing above is pretty much what we're creating here at TravelPUNK.

travelpunk is a message board forum and an advice and tips page. I LOVE travel punk for community, but it is nothing like an organized guideobok, which is what travelwiki provides for us. I think that the resources of Travelpunk could be VERY well utilized in an organized project to do what we backpackers do best: doccument the world.
