$5/pack is WAY cheaper.. I believe last time I was there, they were £5-6/pack, depending on where you bought them. (Bars/clubs obviously being more expensive...) Do the conversion and you're looking at an average of $10/pack. If you're going elsewhere in Europe from there, prices will vary - Spain being super-cheap at roughly $2/pack. Even at clubs.

You can legally take in one carton's worth - if you smoke a major brand, you can get 'em cheap at the Duty Free in Newark or JFK or wherever you're leaving from, but take this from me: If you smoke a more unique brand (i.e. American Spirits, Sherman, Kamel Reds) pay the regular price at your smoke shop and take those with you. First off, you won't find 'em in Europe, and also, I've never had a better icebreaker traveling alone than keeping a shiny turquoise, orange or flat pack sitting on the bar... "Ooh, what're those?"

Damn Omi, that comment almost makes me want to take up smoking a little while before I do any backpacking in Europe

I, too, would say take a carton with you. When you're talking about saving at least $50 by bringing the carton (even more if you smoke a major brand, as Omi said, and buy in duty-free), it's worth what room it takes up (in my opinion). I'm glad I don't smoke, because even Canadian prices (about $9-10CDN a pack) would be hard for me to swallow, given the prices in Tennessee where I went to college and want to live ($3US a pack).
