In Madrid, you can spot public peeing here and there. Some in broad daylight, watering a tiny sidewalk tree or in between parked cars. I've done it too
If ya gotta go, ya gotta go! whadyagonnado <_< ?

Haahahah! I've peed in Athens, hiding behind a truck, cars passing by...It was actually my Taxi driver that found me a nice spot and waited for me!!!!! ^_^
If it's dark outside and middle of the night, who cares?! Since I've worked in the forest for 4 summers, I'm kinda used to do it in the great outdoors, and let me tell ya, when I was coming back to the city after 4 months, I kept looking for some bushes everytime I needed to pee! Hahah!

Oh those holes- there is no dressing them up- it is really nothing more than an end of a sewage pipe. I had the "luck" of using a couple of those things in Russia. Maybe bring your own toilet paper (or napkins or newspaper). There will be none waiting for you if the toilet is free and if it is pay toilet, they won't give you much.
The ones at the train stations are horrible, all toilets are pay-to-piss (except the airport that I visited), and they seem like they are never cleaned. Also, if you go for a long inter-city bus, don't be surprised that the rest stop is nothing more than a couple of bushes, so if you want privacy-walk far.

Yup, please do bring something, anything! I forgot to bring some with me into the airport's fine facilities. Unfortunately I had a flare-up of that water bug I caught (I get the Hershey-squirts before every large move <_< ).
Had to carefully get up from the squat position then return to the main waiting area, making sure to walk with caution. By this time I already hoisted up my pants, so you know . The people who were there with me understood exactly what I needed by the way I threw open my luggage and ripped out some paper from my notebook. Can't have the job half finished...
And with that visual, I say thanks for boxers!
And on a different topic thanks for the welcome and response to my other inquiry, travelpunk.

I remember, a while back, this lady I know was telling me a couple stories about when she was growing up in I think southern Africa. She said that in this one country, can't remember it, sorry, there weren't any standards for washrooms and such. It was typical to see an old lady in a loose, colorful dress walking down the street with her cane or crutch or whatever, and then just stop for a little bit..and then continue on her way. She would have just peed. So if you go to Africa, bring shoes (yay! good advice!). Heh. She also said that the ladies 'train' their babies, sort of, like you would train a dog. Every day at some unofficial time (still, everyone knows when it is), mothers or grandmothers bring out their babies and stick them on the lawn and they roll around and play and poop and pee and all the ladies talk and gab or whatever and then they go inside. This way the kids don't have to wear diapers, I guess. Well! Whatever works, works.

Hey Columbia! WELCOME !!!!!!!!! Hahah! I like the idea of just stopping in the middle of the street and pee...Someday I might try it! It's so much faster then look for a bush!
Diapers are expensive...I might use this trick (Train my baby) if I have a baby someday heheh!

Why thank your very muchos Mocassin. Yes...peeing in the street...saves you from stumbling out into the soppy forest to do your biz, falling over a couple logs on the way and hoping no one turns on their car's headlights and poof! your've hit spotlight...good times good times.

I also noticed a number of Co-ed restrooms throughout Europe as well....it was quite odd carry on a conversation with my lady friend while we were both "taking care of business" in adjacent stalls...

"piss walk" eh? They have a name for that? Well, being a girl I've tried to steer clear (successfully, thank you very much!) of such a talent...pissing drunk is hard enough as is, don't need another thing to focus on..
