i am leaving for Peru in about 2 days and i am not sure if i should take travellers checks. i was planning on doing so, but i recently heard that they are fast becoming useless. people have been telling me that you can find ATM's everywhere these days. thats not hard to believ in Europe but south america i assumed that in the small villages an ATM would be a rare site. i'm not too sure what to do. i was only planning on taking about $500 worth but not sure if thats a good idea anymore. i need advice quickly. thanks

First off - congrats Hayley - you've done a complete 180 and are makin us PROUD!

jteichgrab - When I travelled thru many small rural villages in China, I had enough cash leftover from the last "major" town I was in to use. I much prefer ATM cards b/c I find them much more convenient. If you will be stopping thru a tiny village with possibly no ATMs, just plan ahead and withdraw a bit more cash from the previous ATM to last you thru. This should not be too hard cuz stuff is dirt cheap in those rural places and your money will last a lot longer anyways...

What an amazing turn-around, Hayley! I am sooo glad that you stepped up to the plate and swung like there was no tomorrow! You've been a big inspiration to us all B) !

Have fun learning how to mix drinks (a trade that you will be able to use world wide to earn cash See CD's topic on bartending)!

Hope you meet tons of people and continue to keep us updated!

Hey all,
well, after starting my job, meeting new people, having a good time, etc, I'm still very home sick.
I'm enjoying it, but not as much as I thought I would.
I think I should of broken myself in slowly, done a few trips before hand, get the feel of being on my own without my friends and family. I have met new friends, but they're not like everyone at home, I dont trust them and dont really feel confident travelling with them.
So, unfortunately, I'm going home. I leave here on the 17th.
I dont want to give up on travelling, still want to see the world, but in short bursts, that way its not so scary!
Sorry to dissapoint, but thanks for all your help, advice, etc.

Hayley, you did well girl.

You stuck it out and gave it a chance when you could have easily packed up and gone home so much earlier. Chalk it up to an experience and I'm sure your future travels will be all the better for this experience.

No one would be dissapointed. It was a good trip, you got a good month and a half in, and experienced something new. Be grateful you go the chance. :D

Hayley, Glad you're still around. I'll be in the same position as you tomorrow. I fly out of Sydney to Athens via Bangkok on my first solo trip - anyone know a good sedative?
