Hello everyone,
I am going to be a first time travler to Europe and found this board today. Looks like Ireland and UK are the best bet for a first time, english only traveler. I want to go around sep-oct time and plan on staing for 2 weeks. I have no idea where to start or land for that matter. I am on a limited budget but will spend some money if it is worth it. I want to do a little backpacing and site seeing. I also want to throw some partying. I am in desperate need of this vacation. I am going solo. Any help would be great! I live in California and have not done much traveling. Time to start!

Well, I've found with the Brits and Irish, it doesn't matter where you are, a party will tend to find you!

So, read a Fodor's guidebook (which are VERY good on the sights, IMO). Get a feel for what the countries have to offer, then post back here with questions. We've got a nice sampling of Brits and Irish here on this site who can give you firsthand info, plus even more that have BEEN there and can help, as well.

Hey, and watch out for those Cali forest fires...!

Great picks on first countries to visit, but do not sell yourself short, pretty much everyone I met in Netherlands spoke English, and its just a short flight

Prices are just coming down at that time, so you might be able to save a few bucks, and you will be surprised how much you can get done in 2 weeks!!

Hey, another travellin' Firefighter here...where in CA are you out of?

Ireland and UK is definitely a good place to start. My first time overseas was solo and I landed in Dublin. It was still a huge culture shock, but I soon found out that people were most helpful, and being English speaking was a huge plus. Also, when in London, check out special fares for trips to Paris. It's been several years since I was there, but the Chunnel provides really quick Paris getaways. They had deals on 2-3 day short trips too.

Also, you should check out a firehouse over there. Go to: http://www.dublincity.ie/servicesframe.html

Another very cool site is: www.worldfiredepartments.com (many thanks to Canadian Dude)
