What's the cheapest way to get from Prague to Budapest?

Walking

But since that's impractical: my book's a couple of years old, but gives a starting point. Prague to Budapest by train (10 hrs) 1300 Kc approx $27US. By bus, (8 hours) 1050 Kc approx $25 US. I tried breaking up the trip through Vienna, but that ended up being more expensive.

10 hours is perfect for a night trip. sleep on the train=save money+time

Here here. There are several departures daily, so I'd imagine there's a night train. We haven't done the overnight train on that particular route, but have on several routes in Poland, as well as from Krakow to Budapest. Only downside was that we missed the scenery through the Tatras and Slovakia.

eurolines bus is the cheapest and it also goes overnight
