Hiya, for must temples you actually have to take your shoes off so sandals are the best, they are quicker to get off and put back on, particually if you are seing a lot of temples in one day. It is usually ok to wear socks though. I am sure someone will let you know while you are over there but when you sit in fornt of budda or a monk do not let the bottom of your feet point towards them at any time. Thais see the bottom of feet as the lowest part of the body and there for extreemly disrespectfull. Remember this as well if you are sitting on a long distance bus, don't put your feet on the top of the seat as it really gets people cranky. Grand Palace in Bangkok you need shoes with a back strap, I wore my boots here and it was fine. To get into the jade budda you need to take your shoes off. Also in most temlpes you are required to cover your shoulders. I carried a sarong everywhere and just popped toat on when I needed to. Short skirts and bum shorts are not really appropriate for temples and places of importance to the thai people. Also hats bandannas ect are not surposed to be warn in to the temples. Hope this helps.
