Just curious if anyone has gone on a really long hike? Like something in the mountains where you really had to rough it? Im looking into thru hiking the appalachian trail which is some 2168 miles which takes roughly 5-7 months from what i read but it sounds interesting and a pretty cheap trip i read between 3000-4000 dollars not bad for 5-6 months. just wondering if anyone had done anything close to this long and had any idea on how rough it really is? :D

wow - i always thought i'd like to hike the appalacian trail too - but damn - i never thought about it being months on end. 3 days is the longest i've gone and that was just in the san jacinto's here in california.

if you do go though, watch out for all those appalachian hillbillies living in the mountains - and don't take their pictures!!

that comment was actually in reference to a pbs documentary i saw on the appalachian peoples a few months back. i forget which president it was, but during some campaign where the goal was to erase poverty or something like that, attention was brought to the appalachian region because there were so many po' folks living there. this spawned a small monster becasue after that was made 'news' a lot of film/photojournalist students went up there trying to capitalize on the poverty of the natives - well, one got really pissed and killed a guy for taking a picture of his house. the guy thought that the film/photos would be used to humiliate he and his neighbors.

so watch out kyle if you're in to film making!!
