Google Voice
I know it's by invite only right now and I had to wait a few weeks to get mine but late last night the invite came and now I am the super stoked owner of a new phone number that will be mine forever. No more porting from cell company to cell company, no more thoughts about cancelling a phone service and losing my number.
I might sound like a salesman but I really think Google Voice is the best thing for travelers who need to keep connected to come out yet. It's like a really awesome version of skype... that doesn't suck.
Anyway get yourself an invite from the google folks or check out the youtube video series on it. I've made the switch and I'm stoked.

Pretty cool, I got one a couple of months ago because I still have a .edu email address. is it open to the public yet? They need to work on the custom greetings for different groups because it's not functioning yet. though it will be cool to record greeting for your friends... "Hey Jake! Can't come to the phone right now leave a message my Hoosier brother."
And I love the fact that you can choose your phone number.

Or do we want to eat without fear, tearing into the local stew, the humble taqueria's mystery meat, the sincerely offered gift of a lightly grilled fish head? I know what I want. I want it all. I want to try everything once."

never heard about Google voice. Thank you for the information. Think it is very convenient for the travelers if it is like skype.
