Hi all...
Just want to ask, in particular *the aussies* what you did about travel insurance. Its just that looking at what the travel agent can provide, its going to be in excess of $1000 for the first year. If im going to be away for 2 years, i dont think i can handle the fact of parting with this kind of money. Now, if im right, travel insurance is a necessity in order to travel, but im just not sure if i could picture everyone who was going backpacking in europe parting with this kinda money before they left. In other words guys.... Pweeeeeeeease help me. Leeroy. p.s. Have a good new year ppls... |

Hey TP,
Do you think that your Travel Insurance is the way to go for me, for europe/uk and the states. Cuz, with the rise of the aussie dollar against the $us, this travel insurance is going to save me almost $800 over the insurance policy i am being offered down here in australia... Ive printed a copy of the policy to browse through tonight Thanks leeroy |
The insurance that is offered through Travelpunk, is in conjunction with hostel world. It's very straight forward and is good for travelers world wide.
If it's cheaper and coverage is almost the same, the same, or superior, then it makes sense to me. It's all about budget travel! When my girl friend came from Spain last summer for three months, I got the insurance for her, and we had peace of mind (since that was a concern for her). She's coming again in Feb for another 3 months and then again later in the year. This means that we'll use the coverage for at leat another 6 months again. It's good, cheap, and a very well respected company provides the converage  . |
Instead of getting 12 months of travel insurance, would it be reccomended to just buy 5 months worth of insurance that will cover my travels throughout europe, and then once i arrive back in the uk and start working, ill be sans insurance. I should be ok then, yeah. (+ it will save me $$)
Thoughts? Thanks |
So, you'll be insured through your job when you get ack to the UK to start working again?
If that's the case, 5 months of insurance seems to sound sufficient. |
OUTRAGEOUS!! That was my initial reaction when my STA travel agent gave me a brochure on travel insurance and their prices. I hear ya ozpacka. I have been trying to investigate this stuff before I leave Aus.
http://www.travelinsurance.com.au/ has a little bit of information on policies. I did a search on here for travel insurance for a year (worldwide coverage) and still came up with the cheapest being AUD$755. Too expensive!! The policies quoted seem to be with companies Ive never heard of....'down under' and 'smart cover' The only big name was QBE. I did however have a promising conversation with a mate. He did a RTW trip and paid $100 for 2 months. He thought it was with HBF. I will have to probe his brain to make him remember or see if he still has the documentation. If you find any good info be sure to post it, as will I if something good comes up. |
I hate to keep bringing this up, but would you guys have insurance for every single day that you were away from your country. If even that time was going to be in excess of two years? Like, say that you settled in the one area for 6mths of that two years?
What can i say, im a cheaparse traveller, whos probably not taking this travel insurance thing too seriously. Late |
Ok, this will be my final question regarding travel insurance. Regarding the insurance via TP/Hostelworld. Obviously its purchased online, but my only question now, is that must it be purchased in your home country before you leave, or can i say organise it from the uk once i arrive. I will be covered for my first 90days already with another deal i got going, but when that runs out, can i purchase TP Travelinsurance from the UK.
Hope this makes sense. Im going to be buying tickets tommorrow. Yay, can someone come back to me on this one asap? Thanks Leeroy |
hey ozpacka, Im yet to get my insurance. Can I ask the general details of your 1st 90 days cover?
|
Oh, that was offered through my credit card. I got my insurance covered now. flightcentre were offering great deals on flights and bits and pieces, and one of their offers were 20% of travel insurance.
Just paid the $604 for 12mths, or i could have paid the $375 for 3mths. Just glad its out of the way. My flight was with emirates for $1300, a bit on the upside, but its out of the way. Just visas to go really. Oh, and the busabout stuff too :) Any questions ozm8, just holla. Travel insurance i now know to be the necessary evil. Leeroy |
Thanks for the info ozpacka cheers mate

I just bought insurance for my girlfriend (coming from Spain, I'm in Los Angeles), online, in 3 minutes. 3 months for $110USD. It is $395USD for a whole year/per person! |
Thanks TP... no more questions from me on travel insurance, *promise*
I will be using this insurance for sure for my second year of travel, as it will have to be purchased in london. Paid for my tix today, let the countdown begin. Leeroy |
