Hi there!

1. Yes, a sleep sheet is built pretty much exactly like a sleeping bag... but it's just a sheet. Generally they're nice to have because
2. Some hostels DON'T provide linens on the beds (sheets). "Linen provided" means you'd have a fully made bed and won't have to worry about bringing a sleep sheet, if you don't want to. But it's nice to have one.

Welcome to the boards!

you can make your own sleep sheet by folding a double duvet cover in half and sewing round the edges. Its more of a hygiene thing I think....

I found my sleep sheet espiecally useful on overnight train journeys, where most of the time I was supplied with only an itchy blanket. They take up next to no room so highly recommended.

I'd definitely bring one along, they can come in pretty useful on overnight trains and such - it's amazing what a difference a thin piece of material can make when you're cold! Most of the hostels we've stayed do provide linens, but at some you have to pay extra (in Stockholm this added quite a pretty penny to our hostel expenses) so it's worth it in the end. You can even make one out of a double, queen or king sheet, just fold it over and stitch the openings shut. Travel stores sell cotton ones for about $25 CDN or $50 CDN for silk, which are nicer, lighter and smaller...but more expensive.

I like the sleep sheets a lot when comming back at night hammered. They're a lot easier to sleep in drunk for some reason. Some of them even have diedowns so you don't fall off the bunks - very handy.

I've been in a few hostels that will kick you out if they find you using a sleep sheet or sleeping bag as they are the leading cause of spreading bed bugs.
