Since i am traveling to Europe for the first time and i dont know a lick of any language over there, will i be able to get around and talk to people without having a huge language barrier?

i just got back from my first backpacking adventure in europe:
1) you can get around fine speaking only english 2) BUT DON'T - learn some of the basics for countries you'll be visiting! the most important things i learned on this trip: LEARN THE LANGUAGE, you start to feel like an ass when all you can say in a native tounge is "can you speak english" ... also, bring 25% more money than you thought you'd need - that peace of mind will be invaluable! |
yeah I just keep it to english and keep the common sence flowing, so far thats worked out fine ;)

I was in Bulgaria, very hard to communicate but when you really need to, you can always manage to be understood...I always try to learn a few words, like Hello, Thank you, Please, How much, Where are the toilets...Pretty useful and I think it's a great way of showing respect to the locals. ;)

Here is a post I put up a few months back, deals with some Language Issues
When you are trying to get by with almost nothing on your tounge but english, be patient, and do not yell in english what you are trying to say, it will not make them understand any better...use symbols, pictures, and hand jestures to get your point across, keep a pen and paper handy, trust me, you will need it :cowboy: |
