hi all,

i am sick of winter and heading to summerland australia over new years...primary objective: having fun and enjoying the beach...

being a backpacker virgin this will be something new and exciting for me...i am tired of the marriotts and hyatts, this is real life and i believe a great way to meet fun people.

so i need ur advise...first, where are the best parties...i plan to go to surfers paradise, byron bay and cairns...any suggestions...then...any tips on what i got to expect from hostels and what i need to know...ur comments are appreciated.

anyone else happens to be there at the same time...let me know...looking forward to hearing from you. cheers!

Hey Dallas, welcome to the best backpaker site on the net. I live in Newcastle which is about a 2 hour drive north of Sydney. You will be certain of a good time in Surfers and Byron. Never been to Cairns but I'm sure they now how to party there too

Byron is a pretty laid back kinda place so its good to chill out. Surfers is more full on - party, club scene that kinda thing. You'll have a blast for sure wherever you go. One place to check out in Surfers would be Shooters niteclub.

For happeneing city centers, I would give my vote to Sydney and Melbourne for sure, both cities are lively and have tons of stuff to see.

Some great things in Melbourne are

Center Point Tower
Watching the buskers from the lawn of the city library
China Town
Have a meal on the Tram resturant that takes you around the city while you eat
If you enjoy a gamble, the casino is a happening place
CAMBERWELL MARKET held every Sunday morning in the car park behind shops in Bourke Road you'll find all kinds of old and odd stuff there

Some great things to do in Sydney are:

Enjoying a pint on the patio of a pub at Circular Quay
Wondering around the Sydney Fish Market
Taking the ferries to check out the city scape ( very cheap)
The Sydney Harbour Bridge walk ( if you can get a reservation and want to pay the coin to do it)
The Royal Botanic Gardens are free and enjoyable for a relaxing walk
And you can not miss a noght around Kings Cross Sydneys " Red Light District"
