Hey,
Im a student in England and am thinking about doing a tour of Italy and Greece four 3 weeks to a month around July/August with some mates (hoping to get my hands on some tickets for the olympics) and was wondering whether its better to camp or stay in hostels? I quite like the idea of waking up at some campsite near a gorgeous beach and just going for a swim and that type of thing, but would an idea like that be realistic, or are a lot of the campsites in fairly shite locations?

Cheers

Punter

punter WELCOME TO THE BOARDS!

Sounds like a great trip in the making! I haven't done those countries yet, but rest assured, I will

I think yo can have the best of both worlds in Greece, in terms of staying at a hostel and also waking up a diving into the warm and inviting Mediterranean

Check out Far Out Camping! This hostel is very popular always has the international parties going on- at their pool!

The Pink Palace in Corfu is also supposed to be among the best of the wild beach hostels.

I'm not too familiar with camping in Europe, but perhaps the others on this board can help you out with tips on that .

Hey Punter! Welcome!!! :D

I was in Greece last august...I didn't really camp, I stayed at Hostels. Usually, when you arrive somewhere, hostel owners (usually there are at least 30 of them!) offer you a deal and a room can be pretty cheap if you bargain a bit...I was offered 15Euros a night for nice 2 beds bedrooms. I slept at an hostel for 7Euros a night. It's cheaper in smaller towns...

I saw a camping ground and it looked great. Just a few tents in the sand, on the beach. I slept outside once...Usually, there are long chairs on beaches you can lie in at night, and I think if you don't find a place to sleep, you could always sleep there. No one there at night, and no bugs too. Camping in the wild is forbidden in Greece, but I don't think the police roams at night in the wild heheeh!

Hope it helps.

Thanks for the welcome-yeah im pretty exctied about the trip, especially because its part of a whole year of travelling between school and uni :D. i quite like the idea of trying to get a lot of hiking and camping in during the trip, but im sure hostels are just as fun, and you might meet more people.
hopefully apart from that im gonna be spending a lot of time in australia teaching diving, which im pretty stoked about.

Yeah, Im seriously excited! Im thinking about doing some other stuff like touring NZ and that type of thing. I read artoftravel.com, and the chap who wrote that seemed to have no trouble finding campsites or a handy beach to sleep on in europe-its a good book as well! ill probably just get some eurail tickets and wing it, as im sure ill be able to find somewhere to stay...or mabye thats a bit optimistic!?
