What kinds of things are you hearing? I have a friend who is greek and is in the process of finalizing her greek citizenship. She will be living in Athens starting in the fall. She said it's not ideal but it's really not that bad. If you decide to go and you hate it, just leave! Head for the islands or something.

Well, everything is subjective. Some people absolutely hate Paris with a passion, and I'd move there if I could! But that's just me-- I don't necessarily want to just take someone else's word for it, I'd rather see it for myself and make my own judgment.

SV would be refering to me, who thinks Paris is the single most overrated city in the world.

However, Athens, I enjoyed. Of course, if Ancient ruins and monuments are not your thing, then yes, I imagine it could be just another big, smelly city. However, my guess is folks whose take on it is that didn't stay in the "Plaka," or tourist district. It's right there within walking distance of all the major sites, has hotels, restaurants, general stores, souvenir shops, etc., all that the traveler might need.

If you're looking to get off the beaten track, though, and don't want such standard fare, well, then yes, I recommend going somewhere other than a place people have been going to visit for more than 2000 years...
