the world is open to me and i have 3 weeks before i start back in school and i would love to go somewhere. i dont expect my lack of experience to be any trouble....i just need to narrow down my options and find a place to go. The reasons my options are so limitless is that i have family that works for an airline and i get round trip airfare basically free...all i have to pay is a $7 homeland security tax or something. it bothers me that im not taking advantage of this every day of the year, and a lack of planning/research makes the whole endeavor a bit intimidating ....some one point me in the right direction

take a map, close your eyes and point to a place - if the place is too dangerous (ie Iraq) try again

I agree with Steph -- if you can avoid it, don't go to Europe when it's ultra-crowded, like now. Go the other direction. Try Central or South America. I highly recommend Guatemala, Costa Rica and Belize for starters. Check out my web page below for the travelogues on them (or here for Omisan's recent trip to Central America), and see if it's up your alley...

I'd say Brazil ( )... But it's kinda dangerous if you go to the touristy places... And esp. if you're American... So I say go for Russia. I've never been there... but it looks so damn cool!

What are your favorite movies, books, pieces of art, foods?? Where do they take place or here are they from? Find some inspiration in things you already like, so you can delve deeper into them.
Unless they're in Europe - like everyone else has said, WAY too crowded right now

I don't think Europe as a whole is way too crowded, but the tourist areas/large cities. We've been having a great time in smaller areas in Europe, away from tourists and crowds, and yet there's still so much to see and with the right planning, still not that expensive (barring Ireland/UK of course, it's just more expensive there). I definitely wouldn't count Europe out, just stay off the beaten bath and you can have a great time and see stuff other people don't take the time too plus avoid the annoying tourists.
If I had the choice though, I'd probably go to Thailand. I've wanted to go there since I was friends with a Thai girl who couldn't stop raving about how beautiful it is. Or else Belize - also knew a girl from there. I'm a beach/ocean buff though. I'm biased.
Australia/New Zealand would be a priority as well. I like Omi's idea of finding a place that fascinates you or draws you in and go there.

Russia is cool, but go to st petersburg not moscow. people are nicer and it has the most amazing sites. if you're new to travelling though, russia's kinda a head trip because it is a very different place. but totally worth it. st petersburg and russia are kinda overlooked a lot, but having lived there i can tell you it's ri-god-damn-diculous
yup yup

i would watch out for eastern block countries because your gonna a visa-------and you will spend your days and nights avoiding cops that your gonna have to bribe to get your passport back.........although there cheap.....if they see your an american they say your papers are outta order and will have to bribe them to get your passport back.....they are beautiful countries with there own uniqueness....definately worth checking once in your life.....as long as you know what your getting into.

Okay...not sure what "Eastern block" countries you've been to were this has happened, Wong, but I've never experienced it. I've been to Estonia, Lithuania, Poland, Czech Republic, Hungary, Russia and Bulgaria and never had them snag my passport and say my papers are out of order. I've never had to bribe a cop in any of the 58 countries I've been to.
So, maybe you should be a wee bit more specific before you give this advice to a newbie traveler. And as for visas, fewer and fewer are requiring Americans to purcahase visas in advance these days. Of all the above countries I went to, only Russia required a visa.

Hey cosmo, I don't hate you just really really dislike you
I haven't run into trouble in the Eastern European countries however I have only been to the Czech and Slovak Republics and Hungary.
Did you say anywhere? How about Uzbekistan or Gabon?
