I leave in 3 days for my trip round south-eastern europe, and have been checking the foreign office website for things to look out for. A couple of the countries require you to register with the police within 48 hours of arrival, is this absolutely necessary, what would happen if we don't (we'll only be there for 3 or 4 days anyway), and how would we going about doing this?

Some of the places I read, recommend this for travellers going to places where there is trouble or going to be touble...or if you're staying for a few months. I think it's mainly to keep track of tourists incase something really bad happens. If you know you're going to be in an area with any kind of political or natural troubles, couldn't hurt. If not and it's only for a few days I don't think you're required too.

I'm from the UK and according to the foreign office website, I'm required to register with the police within 5 day of arrival in Bulgaria (I will be staying there for 6 days), and within 48 hours of arrival in Bosnia (where I'll be for 4 days).

I've never heard of anyone having to do this....but then again I don't know anyone who has been to those countries.

If it says you have to on those counties' websites then it might be a good idea. And if it turns out you didn't need to then atleast you won't have to worry about anything.

Actually, that sounds right to me. I know in Belarus they like to know where all the tourists are, and we had a friend who got a nice visit from the secret police after checking in. With his credentials as a journalism professor in Estonia, they naturally deduced that he was a CIA operative.

If the official site says check in with the police, CHECK IN! Your entry will be recorded, and if you don't leave within the proscribed time, notice will be taken, and your motives might be questioned...

Usually it is to keep people from being an "Undocumented Visitor", like anywhere else they just want to know who is coming, going and why. Usually it is just a quick form and sometimes a payment but if you don't and get caught there is usually a LOT more questioning and if something went down in the area recently.. you look suspicious whether you anything about it or not.

Hi ajb3000 ! I do remember we had to register to the police in Romania and Bulgaria, but I had read and was told so once there, that the accomodation staff was responsible for it. That was in 2002, maybe it has changed, so make sure with the people where you're staying.

hmmm....I certainly didn't read that in any of the guidebooks I read on Bulgaria. And my contact there -- a Bulgarian citizen -- never mentioned it. And when I did that drop for the CIA...oops, sorry, got carried away.

Seriously, I didn't see that for Bulgaria, but I wouldn't be surprised for places like Kosovo or even Bosnia, where there is still tension, land mines, whatever.
