hi all.
so i fly out of nz to london on wednesday next week, my dad shouted me a one way ticket there for my 21st.
i went to sta travel today to get my travel insurance, and they asked if i had a return ticket..i said no, i have left money at home with my mum to buy me a ticket once i have spent all my money.
they told me there is no way that the immigration ppl in londom will ever let me in without a return or onward ticket, obviously a return ticket (to nz) is more expensive, but they said if i got an onward ticket to say..france, then france are gonna want proof of an onward or return ticket...this kinda takes the spontinaity (sp?) out of my trip...so, basically, my question is...how do backpackers get away with not having tickets to and from each country before they enter?
pretty much, i have a bunch of NZD's and im gonna come home once its all gone, so i dont have a specific date of when im coming home..i dont want to have to pre-buy all my tickets..when i dont even know exactly where i am going...please help!

sorry for the long-winded message.

cheers

It seems you are in a predicament. They asked further questions at STA when I asked for a one way ticket- I was OK because of my UK passport.

I think most Australians are fine to enter as they have a working VISA and enough funds in their bank account. I'm not sure what to advise in this situation

Does your onward ticket have to be a plane ticket? Presumably you could use whatever mode you're gonna use to get out of England (Railpass, eurostar, discount airline). I was kinda of under the impression one you're in the European union area you won't have to do this at every boarder crossing?

Although I heard too if you dress rather spiffy and flash a credit card there is much less of a issue about the whole thing.

Did you get any kind of visa?

You can only stay in the UK for a certain amount of time if you didn't get a visa. If you got a Holiday Maker Visa you could have stayed for up to 12 months.

I think you need to have proof from your bank showing you have enough money to make it back to your own country. I know being a Canadian citizen I would need like 1500 CDN
