Hey all, I'm new here please be nice! I wondered what sort of mosquito repellant people can recommend to try as i am going to Italy for a month, hardly exotic, but I have a real bad reaction to insect bites. Has any one tried those wrist bands that are supposed to contain DEET or whatever it is? I'm not sure wether they are worth a try? If anyone can recommend any tips to reduce the reaction to bites I would be very grateful as i haven't got a clue what is worth trying any more. Thanks x

I havent tried the wrist bands.....but yeah, make sure that anything you do get has DEET in it.........everything ive ever used really only lasts for like 1/2 and hour to an hour w/ me though so im constantly spraying....... ( although I had a friend who used to make this kickin stuff that would actually work all day long but lost contact w/ em & they wouldnt tell me what;s in the stuff cuz they were trying to get it patented....),

i recommend the brand 'jungle' which contains deet
also try taking garlic capsules a few weeks before you go and try not to use perfumes

There is also some solution that you can soak your trekking clothes in that will make you more mosquito repellent - persistetnt mosquitos will go right through clothes, something I learned when getting over 400 mosquito bites on my back on a camping trip to Yosemite...
Yeah, that's my back, and no, that's not discoloration - ALL BITES!

No, you don't need malaria shots for the US... it's super-rare that anyone contracts it here anymore. What's more worrisome is West Nile virus, which is transmitted by mosquitos and has become more prevalent in the southern US, but that generally kills infants and the elderly, and as far as I know, there's no vaccine...

Isn't there some antihistimine tablets you can take a few weeks before you go which help your reacton to bites? Does anyone know if this works?

I don't know if taking antihistamines beforehand does anything (probably, I don't see why not - they just block the release of histamines in your body) - but I try not to take them since they make me so sleepy.

OFF! Botanicals (which is lotion, not spray) is great stuff, and less sticky/nasty. Also, taking Vitamin B-6/complex stops insects from biting as much, worked well for me in Belize
