Its so much nicer traveling overseas versus the U.S. because the they aren't nearly so paranoid. In the U.S. if I have a freakin foil gum wrapper in my pocket, the detector goes off. So...remove your shoes...remove your laptop from its case.....the purpose being?? The scanner can't see through a nylon laptop bag?? Overseas, my experience has been that the laptop stays in the case, shoes stay on, metal watch stays on my wrist, gum in my pocket and I waltz through the detector every time...this is to get on flights headed to a U.S. airport. It's stupid. The bottom line is...9/11 resulted from items that were LEGAL (at the time) to bring on a plane. It wasn't a security breach at all.....but nothing like putting a false sense of security in place to keep the American public feeling warm and fuzzy. Ultimately, I agree with Omi....I pitty the next bastard that causes any truoble on a plane. It will be like that drunk guy from a year or two back who had the crap kicked out of him by passengers for getting rowdy and then getting out of his seat. (Rude, obnoxious travelers are my biggest pet peeve - like those people that arrive at the airport late and then just cut the line to the check-in counter)

Well, speaking as an airline worker, security is something we debate fairly regularly. I agree that the genius terrorist who has his shit together or has solid gold inside help, will be hard to stop.

However, just like anything else, people who are security risks run an even gamut. You may have the genius above, but then there is a guy who is a little less smart, then another who is even less smart, and so on down the line. So, you may not get the genius with the security measures you put in place, but you sure as hell are going to catch the dumbass. Like Richard Reid (I mean, who LIGHTS explosives, nowadays?).

Do I feel safer on today's planes, with our TSA and heightened (some would say paranoid) security? Yes. Before 9-11, our checkpoint security in Columbus was handled by Somali immigrants. Seriously. People from a country we had helicopters raining hot death down on a mere decade ago were running our airport checkpoint security. People who weren't even citizens. Yeah. You don't know how many times I wanted to hand a copy of the BOOK "Blackhawk Down" to their supervisor and say, "Perhaps you should read this before you continue your Somali hiring spree."

Today, take a look at TSA. All U.S. citizens, all government employees with government benefits. They make a decent wage, unlike the minimum wage immigrants working before. Although that doesn't guarentee they'll do a better job, it sure the heck makes it much, much more likely.

So, that's my opinon on airline security. Oh, and underwire bras are caught ALL the time. Trust me. I hear the TSA workers bitching about it on the employee shuttle all the time. And you're not supposed to take cigarette lighters in your carry-on, anymore...

I'd hardly call it necessary - anyone determined enough can get some sort of weapon or incendiary device on to a plane or other "secured" venue. This whole security charade is designed to make you feel more secure.* Think about all the stuff that's deadly but not covered by TSA restrictions...
As someone who hates flying (always have - even pre 9/11) I absolutely don't mind the extra security they take. I usually wear flip flops, jogging pants and a baggy shirt on planes anyway, just for comfort, so I never have a problem.
