I am in Dublin right now and have been for a week or two. The things i wished i have packed were:
1. some kind of food from home (peanut butter, soy sauce, ketchup) it helps deal with the homesickness from home. I was in heaven when I ate my cup of ramen from home....mmmmmm
- ketchup in dublin taste totally different than the ones in the US, its more sweet
2. Plastic bags (because in Dublin they charge you for plastic bags in grocery stores-iono if they charge in other european countries but definitely in dublin
3. Shampoo and bar soap...be sure you pack enough because i ran out in one week

What about socks? oh and sandles are very light and don't take much space, just when you chill at the hostels or whatever.

Funny story, it was my first time backpacking and I thought I overpacked. Luckily the first part of my trip was spent on a coach and the driver was generous enough to help me with my bags. Unfortunately, my second two weeks were spent husseling through trains, and it became a bit of a hassle to have actual luggage. If I were to backpack again, I would bring a small bag that can fit on my back without causing back damage, and wash my clothes everytime I got to a new hostel. I wrote all about my packing, and the funny consequences of packing too much in my travel blog. You can go to http://www.katlyn22@blogspot.com, hope that will help out a little, and have fun!

What to pack...good question. My advice would be..first what kind of trip are you on. Usually on tours, or vacations where you have a coach, like the first part of my month and 1/2 trip, bringing luggage is okay, therefore you have more room for more things. However, on the second part of my trip I had to take trains, and husseling with luggage was a drag...and some! Make sure you know what kind of transportation you have before packing. Luckily for me the first part of my trip I was on a coach with a great driver who helped me out with my luggage, but the second half I was about the chuck my bags out the window. I have a blog that shows the comparision, check it out at http://www.katlyn22@blogspot.com...good luck!

My only observation is that you're taking a pantload (heh) of pants for a man who is also taking a clothesline! I would not count on being able to wash your jeans much if you do not go to a place with an actual dryer (rare in Europe...) but do a rotation with the lighter weight stuff and you'll be able to reuse it TONS. If the fabrics you take are wicking, they'll hold up better and wash better so you could take less. I know most of us are not ashamed of wearing the same exact outfit multiple times in a row. And it gives you more room in your pack for souvenirs and perhaps new and exciting clothes you find along the way and also less that you'll ruin on the road. I habitually wear at least one article of clothing to death while I'm traveling, and dispose of it to make room for goodies. If you're loaded up with some "better" clothes, it might make you cry to leave you favorite trousers in a dumpster near your hostel...

I do not really wear shorts too much anywhere. I was in Costa Rica and wore those light weight parachute cargos. The button up into shorts/man capris.
As for washing jeans, this is a whole other story, but I do not do that anyways while at home even.
If you want to learn about not washing jeans, refer to the obsession that takes up more of my time than travelling, denim.

DC Jessica, thank you for the insights. Maybe I will lose a pair of the cargos. However, they do take up less room than a T.
Cheers,
Matt

One idea, not that it saves you much space, is to scan your important documents - passport, ticks, etc....- and store them in your email inbox.
And don't lock your TSA locks, as they will still cut them open anyways. Just lock it up before you leave the airport after landing

Ya, this is generally what I do anyhow.
For those people taking 50L packs, how do you make on with 2 Ts? I have this load and truly can not think of what less I could take.

If your not wearing shorts that much, then maybe cut down on the 5 pairs, unless I was reading that wrong since I didn't know what you meant by board-shorts.

I did a month in Thailand with the following:
2 shirts
2 shorts
sandals
towel
small first aid kit (with a little tube of Neosporin)
roll of TP (flattened in a plastic bag)
plastic trash bag
basic toiletries
small maglite flashlight
journal and pens
bandanna
travel alarm clock
pacsafe cord with lock (to fasten the pack to anything in the room while I was gone)
small pacsafe locks for pack zippers
I had a pacsafe shoulder bag as well which carried my guidebook, phrasebook, various maps and notes, and digital camera, as well as tiny essentials like chapstick and hand sanitizer.
lastly, a pacsafe moneybelt (yeah I know, lots of pacsafe, but it works! I just didn't get the mesh pack cover as that attracts way too much attention and is a pain in the ass to deal with)
that's about it!

Does this sound OK?
Here is my packing list for 6 weeks in Central America, May 14-June 25.
What do you suggest I add/take away? I have a small 65L pack (including the daypack) and I want to travel as light as possible. Here it is:
CLOTHES:
3 pair shorts
1 pair capris
1 pair lightweight pj pants
6 tank tops
2 tshirts
4 bras
7 pair underwear
6 pair socks (I dont think I will be wearing socks a lot..they'll get too wet walking in the hot humid , rainy environment)
1 pair flip flops
1 pair keen walking shoes
1 pair water shoes
1 pair other walking shoes
3 sarongs (1 is a mini one)
1 swimsuit top+bottom
2 virtually paper thin material cover-ups
1 hat
1 pair sunglasses
***Too many clothes??***
Toiletries:
Small bottles of shampoo, body wash, facewash, and moisturizer (I need it for my face)
Toothbrush, toothpaste
Hair pick
Hair clips & ties
Hairspray or lightweight gel
Small sample-sized jar of powder foundation w/ brush (again..I need it for my face, I have really bad skin )
Deodorant
Tampons
Polysporin
Chapstick
Sunscreen - WATERPROOF.
DEET
Nail clippers
Eyebrow tweezers
Very small mirror
Essentials:
Passport, copies of passport
Plane ticket
Visa traveller's card
Debit card
Driver's License (Do I really need to bring this??)
Cash
Extras:
Small pad of paper + pens
Key chain flashlight
Bike cable combo lock
Digital Camera + cable + lots of batteries
Lots of plastic ziplock bags
Alright, I think that's it. Any suggestions?? I Leave on THURSDAY!! HOLY CRAP

That sounds like a bit more clothes than you probably need (7 bottoms if you include sarongs, though many of those sound small and light) but the easiest thing to do is to see if it all fits in your pack.

Good call with the plastic ziplock bags!
To your list, I would add:
-proper plastic bags for dirty clothes etc, although you can probably get this there if you buy anything
-some rubber bands (like plastic bags, many uses)
-small sewing kit (for reason I always see these at health clinics)
-small medical kit (at least some bandages, gauge, tape) also some aspirin if you have it... an aspirin does wonders if your body is overheating
-a bit of rope or heavy duty string (for tying stuff that breaks)
