So anyways, this site is pretty sweet. Glad I found it. You guys kick the shiznit.

I just dropped evrything here in Northern Alberta and am flying into amsterdam May 20th. Not really too much time to plan and basically am flying by the seat of my pants.

I do a lot of camping and travelling through Canada but have never took off overseas at all. So I am going to be all lost and scared and crying for my mom but I think I will get over it .(Im just joking :greenguy: )

Im planning on cruising through:

Germany,Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Russia (St.Petersburg), Finland, Sweeden, Denmark and back to Amsterdam. Im thinkin of then going belgium, France then to Ireland to finish my stay.

So here is my questions.
Is communicating with locals pretty tough?
Is it possible to hook up with some jobs when you are travelling?
Does any one have any tips for me?
Any one intrested in hooking up?

Thanks people. Peace

WELCOME LOKI!!!

Well, looks like you have made the right descision to get out there! You totally sound like you're ready for this. Isn't it such a great feeling to know that you are leaving everything behind and going off into the wild blue yonder in a matter of weeks!!!! VERY exciting.

Well, I'm sure there are lots of people that have some great tips for you here, there are many many years of experience on these boards.

Well, i Do know that work in the EU can be kinda tricky if you don't have a work visa. There is always seasonal work at bars and restaurants and places like that that might pay you under the table. Another possibility is through a working abroad program, but you seem like you are far enough along in your plans that it might not be for you. But if you want to work, I'm sure you can find some. Try bars and clubs, they might hire you for a couple of weeks, you can meet a lot of people, and make some pretty decent money.

Well, there's my insight, I'm sure lots of other peeps can help you too! HAPPY TRAVELLING!

First off, Welcome to the Boards!! Glad to have ya.

Also, another possibility for work is to ask around at the hostels. They may be willing to offer free room and some extra money if you help out cleaning, etc.

Hope your trip is a blast. E. Europe ought to be great.

Hi Loki,

Watch out for that Thunder God -- I think the creep has it in for you!

Anyway, the Baltics may prove a tad tricky in communication. I did fine in Talinn, Estonia, with only English, but that is a cruise ship port. It was a different ball of wax in Vilnius, Lithuania. My friend spoke Russian, though, and that went well. Actually more useful in that particular city than the Lithuanian he had learned. And those languages are bizarre, too, 16 letter words with 12 of them being vowels. Ouch.

We've got one Tpunker named Tumbleweedz (I think) who is living in Lithuania, now. Why don't you send her a personal message and see what she thinks as far as getting by. Who knows? Maybe her and her husband will offer to show you around!

St. Pete was no problem with only English, but then again, it is another cruise ship port.

Sounds like you have a great trip planned!
