So you're out doing your backpacking thang, checking out the sights, taking in the vibe of a new country.

Do you take your main pack with your or leave it back at the hostel locked up?

Not a very exciting post I know, input? :sleepy:

Money, documents, credit cards and important telephone numbers I always carry with me.

Sijuki 04-11-2004 07:53 PM

I've known a lot of people that say they keep their main pack at the hostel, but like Bgirl said... keep all important documents on you always. Also I plan to always have my camera nearby, its worth the inconvenience to have to carry it, as opposed to have someone making off with it. Cause I know somoene out there would like one for free.

My clothes, toiletries, and other things, although it would be a hinderance wouldn't cause me a major setback. The biggest loss would be the backpack itself. ID's, money, credit cards, and electronics could be quite a kick in the pocket and cause a trip to be severly shortened or cause you many unnecesarry hours replacing such documents.

just my 2 cents

My backpack has a day pack, so I emagine I'll just take the day pack with me, and leave my main pack at the hostel.

I'll keep most of my important papers in a money belt, everything else will be in my day pack. Also my ipod and cam

hows that sound?

Sijuki 04-11-2004 08:29 PM

That sounds exactly like my plan of action when I go. I know I wouldn't want to lose my cam or ipod.. so I plan to keep them with me as much as possible...

Although my only question was the beach... since obviously you can't take all that stuff in the water with you.

Never had a guesthouse room broken into in any of 15 countries I've been in, so I feel pretty safe leaving valuables hidden in my pack, in my room. A good thing to do is take a debit card and a visa card with you, keep them separate and if you lose your ATM card you got your visa back at the pad. If your room's broken into (unlikely) you've got your ATM card safe and sweet in your wallet.
No worries

You can actually get these plastic water tight things which clip onto you for when you go swimming, they are called 'surf pockets', or something like that. But, I think you can get lockers at some beaches. I'm not entirely sure. I was hopeing it would all become clear when I actually get to a beach in Oz on my own. I don't really want to go frolicking around in the sea with a plastic thing attached to my bikki bottoms!

Perhaps it will look like a floaty in the water

pinion 04-12-2004 11:09 AM

Don't you think you'd run into some trouble if you were doing some diving? If you had a little air filled baggy attached to your bottoms I think the chance of them coming off would be a little higher

:cowboy:

***Beady*** 04-12-2004 01:57 PM

 .....eek, :o even more reason not to have a plastic thing. Or....an air filled baggy. Theres no way I'm frolicking in the sea with no kit on!

I think I'll just take a little bit of cash with me to the beach, and leave my valuables in a locker at the hostel. yup....decision made, with no floaters and my bikkin bottoms still on! :)

joanofarc 04-13-2004 03:09 PM

when don't i come through?

as lame as this little pack is, i'm carrying all my cash in it when i go swimming.
i'm so frikin' paranoid i wouldn't even trust a hostel locker...

Somnambulation 04-14-2004 12:08 AM

Why would you not trust a locker? Do they get jacked much? I'm hoping I won't have to be too paranoid about thievery in Europe, that isn't a tendency that comes natural to me.

joanofarc 04-14-2004 07:52 AM

i'm not going to europe though, som. hopefully it doesn't make me racist, i'm just more weary of theivery there in s.e.a.

rsobers 04-21-2004 02:28 AM

As a corollary to this post, are you guys who are carrying your ipod and digicam with you in your daypacks going to lock your daypack zippers while you walk around? I've never been to europe so I don't know exactly how paranoid I should be about theft, but I'm considering using a combo lock on my daypack (as inconvenient as this may be) as well as my backpack which I'll have chained or stored in a locker back at the hostel.

Sijuki 04-21-2004 07:17 AM

If the zipper to your daypack is going to leave your eyesight ever for even a second, then, yes I would use a lock on it. On the crowded streets and terminals of Europe, SEA, and large U.S. cities there are professional pickpockets and you wouldn't even know they got you. As inconvenient as it may be, it will keep your stuff safe. I figure I will carry some cash in my pocket so as to not have to go rootin in my bag constantly.

Hope it helps.

phlipfudge23 04-21-2004 07:25 AM

Joan: if you've gotten to paranoia, I think you might want to cut back on the pot! ;)

joanofarc 04-21-2004 08:20 AM

oh, it's not the pot pf23, i'm sure it doesn't help... but i've always been paranoid. even as a kid, like if i watched americas most wanted or something - i'd always think the suspect was watching me watch him through the window or something... i'm just weird.. ha! :lol1:

I am and I think its a good idea to! Just something simple like this;

I have one very similar to this, they're great. Very light weight and they work great. You just slip it thru the eye hole in the zipper and your set!

Fedfe 04-21-2004 11:22 AM

yup, i have two of those little combination locks for my zippers.
You can set the combo your self so you don't have to remember something obscure, and they fit nicely through my zipper holes!!! I think it is a wise investment, and they aren't too expensive. :cowboy:
