I have one backpack and one detachable day pack. I have a combo lock on my backpack and leave in hostel. I also have another combo lock that I put on my day pack when sleeping at night. At night I put my money belt in my pillow case. Some places have lockers in rooms, some have reception safes.
Bring locks for lockers. Some you pay for a key. It all varies, think smart for each situation.
One thing I could have had was a thin chain lock to lock my backpack to a fixed object. There has been a few times where you check out but need to leave you stuff at the hostela nd come get it later and move on. Some have luggage storage but others make you leave it in the lounge room or something unsecure.

While we're on the topics of day packs, what do you with your day pack when you go some where you can't bring it? (ie drinking all night, swiming, whatever)

My day pack is where I'm keeping all my valuables, cam, ipod. I'm pretty much living with this pack while I'm in Europe but theres just some places you won't be able to take it with you.

In this case I guess just put it in a locker, or a reception safe?

hi pinion...not sure if i can answer your qu. if ive gone out drinking ive had my valuables (money etc) in money belt on me and only other thing of value - camera in my pocket or in my daypack combo locked in hostel. i guess if no locker you have a problem, unless willing to leave in bag in dorm room- in that case combo lock for bag and chain lock to fix bag to bed.

Red face

Hey, I carry my emotional baggage with me wherever I go (although it's free for the taking to anyone who asks)! Oh wait, you all meant literally...?

cool book related to your little joke, voyd - the things they carry.
i've only read excerpts in my u.s. history class in high school, but it was interesting/sad.
based on memoirs of vietnam era soliders, i think.
