Default First time traveller, sudden urge to run around the world...

Think that title says it all... Also, hi =]
Erm yea basically, my life consists of working in a dive of a job (serving the general public) coming back to my parents house and living infront of a computer... So basically, from that exciting life, last august I just decided "I'm going travelling."

So basically, my rough estimate for leaving is next august and my rough plan is to do atleast a lap of the world (east to west), time isn't an issue and I'm more than willing to work abroad to help fund my travels. One of my main questions at the minute is, as I'm guessing most new comers is, how much should I be looking to spend (£), i'm more interested in doing things as cheaply as possible but not being overly stingy if I don't need to be etc. In the long run, if I can handle the trip in the first place, I want to stay out as long as I can.

I'm rambling a bit so I'll end this here haha.
Cheers

First off, welcome to the boards!!

As for your trip, I think if we're going to give you help on the budget you're going to have to provide just a liiiittle bit more in the "plans" department other than you want to traverse the globe as a whole. There are a whole lotta countries out there and budget for each can be very different....

Haha yea no worries, just put a quick run down in there... of a very rough idea haha.
At the minute my idea is start of in France, through to north africa, Eastern Europe, Russia then China, South Korea, Japan, Aus then New Zealand, South America, NA and Canada. Like I said, it's very very rough (as in im just listing continents mostly haha) and is very open to change, i'm also open to people advising me places to go etc. I am just looking for a very rough estimate etc.
cheers =]

From the people Ive met on the road, doing round the worlds, the average would be around $15,000.00 to $20,000.00.... It sounds like a lot of money, and it is... But with flights, which add up quickly on that kinda trip, that could be a goal dollar amount for you....

It depends on your comfort level. I personally would not take such a trip without $20k. However there are stories of people doing it with no money.

Wow that is a bit more than i'd expected, but it makes sense... I mean I was planning to avoid flying where possible and just travel over land as far as possible, I cant see that making much of a difference in price though. I've recently read that Vagabonding book and was quite inspired by it. I mean if any of you think im living a pipe dream at this point then please tell me haha.
I generally want to avoid getting a RTW ticket as I dont want to be constricted in that way etc.
thanks for the replies so far =]

Well I hear that a typical budget for a month in Europe (incl airfare) is about $2000 - $3000. So 2000 X 12 = $24,000

This is based on a 4-5 week trip, staying in hostels/campsites, spending money on attractions, going out for pre-drinking on cheap booze, living off of supermarkets but also going to restaurants once in a while, using public transportation, having cofee frequently etc - basic backpacker style.

I would assume the price to be the same around developed areas in Asia, such as Korea and Japan. (Certainly Tokyo the prices are comparable when considering the backpacker's lifestyle)

However, in the Middle East, or South/SE Asia, for the same trip timefram and lifestyle you could spend $1000 - $1500. 1000 X 12 = $12,000

You will also factor price changes during low seasons and high seasons, the cost of regional airlines versus trains or buying your own hippie van, etc...

Anyway the point is, if you're smart about it, and go to Europe during low season to avoid the prices but go to cheap places during high season, make $ on the side etc... you can probably cut down on quite a bit of costs, if that's your main concern.

Good luck!
